It’s good if you’re looking for a light read

Maze Runner by James Dashner

January 12, 2024 by Marcella Leave a Comment

The setting of this book is a dystopian world, but for the main character specifically, it is a maze. There is only one truly safe area, in the middle, where everyone lives. The book begins with Thomas being lifted into the center of this maze, called the Glade. Once he is introduced to the Gladers, he begins to tour jobs, until a girl arrives. The only girl to ever be seen within the Glade. This book was excellent, one of those books where while you […]

It ripped out my heart, returned it, then stole it again

Call of the Wild by Jack London

January 12, 2024 by Marcella Leave a Comment

Call of the Wild is based on the gold rush, specifically the dogs used in the dogsleds. This is because the main character Buck, is a dog. He lives the high life, lounging around, occasionally hunting, all in the sweet sun. Then, he gets kidnapped and sold to a dogsled. He has to learn to adapt, to fight back, because no one would let him live if they had the chance to kill him. I have so many favorite things about Call of the Wild. […]

Definitely worth every penny!

Legendborn by Tracy Deonn

January 11, 2024 by Marcella Leave a Comment

Legendborn is an amazing book. It’s set in modern day, at a college. But it’s fantasy, so with an Arthurian explanation, and a blood tie, you have a bunch of modern-day knights. The main character, Bree, isn’t one of them. But on her first night of college life, she sees something she can’t explain. This, as you can expect, is the start of several hundred pages of chaos. I loved this book so much, it was fantastic. I love a good Arthur and his knights […]

Love it, but maybe not for everyone

White Fang by Jack London

January 10, 2024 by Marcella Leave a Comment

I’ve read this book maybe 20 times, and love it more each time. It’s such a comfort, although it is on the bleakest of topics. One of the first lines is “The land itself was desolation, lifeless, without movement, so lone and cold that the spirit in it was not even that of sadness.” Yet, it makes me happy. It’s set within the Gold Rush era, everyone traveling on sleighs led by dogs. The main character of White Fang is a dog, well, technically a […]

A Bittersweet Read

The Sunbearer Trials by Aiden Thomas

January 10, 2024 by Marcella Leave a Comment

The Sunbearer Trials is based on Mexican mythology, set in a world in which every ten years, a competition is held. There are reasons but the important thing for the main character Teo, the son of the goddess of the birds, is that the winner gets to bring light to the land, and the loser is sacrificed. While this doesn’t directly affect Teo, it affects his best friend. However, when the time comes for the selection, he gets chosen. I think my favorite part about this […]

“That’s all in the name of good drama. The past is boring anyway.”

Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson

January 10, 2024 by Marcella Leave a Comment

Tress of the Emerald Sea is set in a fantasy world that has pirates and trade routes in the oceans, but there aren’t oceans. They are instead spores, and if these spores come into contact with water, they explode in different ways. Most of these ways will kill you. Tress, the main character, loves collecting cups and talking to her friend Charlie. Then she realizes he may be more than a friend, at which point Charlie is sent off to find a bride. Tress embarks […]
