More History Inspired Fantasy!

The Poppy War by R. F. Kuang

July 4, 2024 by Marcella Leave a Comment

I have already read another R.F. Kuang book, Babel, which was fantastic. So, I had high expectations coming in. They were met. I wouldn’t say this was the best book I’ve ever read, but it was certainly fantastic. I really don’t want to spoil it, so I’ll try to be as vague as possible, but there were so many things about this book that I liked. First, the main character didn’t just have everything handed to her. She faced challenges, and overcame them not only through […]

Just a fun book, and a quick read

Timeline by Michael Crichton

May 24, 2024 by Marcella Leave a Comment

Previous to this, I had read one book of Michael Crichton’s, The Andromeda Strain. I loved that book, and after being told to read this, I thought this would be good. Going in, I was expecting something very realistic, as Michael Crichton is generally very interested in science, and while he does falsify it, he rarely makes leaps that are truly, truly impossible. I have to just say that one of my only frustrations with this book is the leaps he makes. Yes, it is possible, […]

This deserves to be a classic

Andromeda Strain by Michael Crichton

May 23, 2024 by Marcella Leave a Comment

The Andromeda Strain is an amazing book by Michael Crichton. Michael Crichton is a fantastic science fiction writer in all of his books, and I love this one in particular. Although one of his most famous books is Jurassic Park, and it’s probably a good starting point, I started with The Andromeda Strain. I, in fact, did not realize that Michael Crichton was the author of Jurassic Park. I didn’t have any expectations going in, I had just found this book and didn’t have anything better to do. The […]

Everyone should read this, it should be obligatory

Babel by R. F. Kuang

February 21, 2024 by Marcella Leave a Comment

This book was recommended to me, and so I picked it up. After an… Engaging beginning, (It just jumps right into everyone being racist to the main character) I decided this wasn’t going to be a light read. It wasn’t. This book is something everyone should read, not because it’s good, but because it provides a lens through which you can view imperialism and racism and sexism and general problems with today’s world, and focuses it. It focuses not simply on the individual level, but […]

This is a classic, and deserves to be

The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart

February 21, 2024 by Marcella Leave a Comment

This book is a wonderful book, a classic, I have deemed it. I don’t actually know its status on whether it’s actually a classic, but that’s not important. I love the premise of this book, and I love the puzzles and the characters. The solutions to issues are just fun, and mostly whimsical. When they get caught, it’s for a good reason, a well explained one. The character dynamics are fun, and the way they clash and mesh is just perfection. To list a few […]

Childhood memories

Magyk by Angie Sage

February 21, 2024 by Marcella Leave a Comment

I read this book when I was younger, and it deserves to be a classic in my eyes. It’s got all the elements of a good fantasy story, most of which I don’t even know how to word, but this book has it! The world it’s set in is built really well, and just breathes with life. The little details sprinkled throughout the book are just so fun to scour. Not to mention the plot twist(s), which are not necessarily predictable, but make sense completely […]
