Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard: The Ship of the Dead by Rick Riordan

This is for the Youth Bingo Square. Rick Riordan is a pretty big deal in my house. My younger child (aged 11) has been reading through all of his books in a continuous, never-ending, are-you-really-doing-this-again loop for the last three years. Of the series written by Riordan, the Magnus Chase books are probably my second favorite. The Sword of Summer introduces Magnus, a homeless teenager living in Boston. He has been homeless for two years, since the death of his mother to glowing blue wolves. […]

Things You Save In a Fire by Katherine Center

July 31, 2019 by Manimama 2 Comments

Things You Save In a Fire is a pretty quick read that is probably a good beach or vacation book. My 13-year-old daughter agreed to read this book with me for the ‘Two Heads’ bingo square. The title of the post is a sentence she repeatedly tried to insert in to my own answers. Mom: I thought this was a good book. It was a story about Cassie, a firefighter in Texas who moves to Massachusetts when her life gets turned up-side down. It follows […]

Bad Blood by John Carreyrou

July 13, 2019 by Manimama Leave a Comment

CBR11 Bingo Science square What exactly was it that made Elizabeth Holmes so believable to so many people? Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup gives the history of how Elizabeth Holmes started her company Theranos and how the company fell apart around her. John Carreyrou very thoroughly details every step- from Holmes’ college days to her dropping out, working with two other people on her initial idea of a wearable treatment device and how her original plans turned in to the […]

Revisiting an old favorite

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

July 13, 2019 by Manimama Leave a Comment

CBR11 Bingo Back To School. I haven’t read this book since middle school probably. I did read it repeatedly in my younger years because I identified very much with Jo- never quite doing what was expected of her or fitting in very well, but always with the best of intentions. I have to say that my feelings now aren’t much different than they were twenty-five years ago. Little Women tells the story of the March family during the Civil War years. Mr. March is fighting […]

Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid

July 13, 2019 by Manimama 2 Comments

CBR11 Bingo Pajiba square. I had read glowing write-ups of this book seemingly everywhere. An oral history of a fictional band did not seem at all interesting to me- I tend to ignore oral histories even of bands/movies/shows I have loved- but the rave reviews had my interest piqued. I’m so glad I got over myself.   As I said, the book is written as an oral history provided by the members of the band, “the Six” as well as singer Daisy Jones, their management, […]

Lethal White by Robert Galbraith

July 13, 2019 by Manimama Leave a Comment

This book is for CBR Bingo Birthday square- I had to look up the birthdays of several authors before I figured out which review hit which square. Lethal White picks up hours after the events of Career of Evil– Robin Elacott is married and struggling through her own wedding reception as she comes to terms with her realization that she not only loves her job in Cormoran Strike’s private investigations firm, but that she may also have some feelings for Strike himself. She also discovers […]
