Strange and stranger

Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor

Muse of Nightmares by Laini Taylor

January 22, 2020 by Manimama 1 Comment

I received Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor through the CBR Book Exchange (thanks again!). I absolutely loved this book. It is fanciful and beautifully written. Lazlo Strange is an orphan with dreams of a bigger life than he has. He escapes the drudgery of his early years by pretending to be a mythical warrior from a magical land. One day, the name of this land is lost, and Lazlo knows that there must be magic involved. He eventually finds his way to the […]

In order from most adored to least

Red, White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

The Hating Game by Sally Thorne

Get A Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert

January 22, 2020 by Manimama Leave a Comment

Three romances to start off my reviews for the year. I ended 2019 with at least ten books I never got around to writing up, so I am going to try to keep on top of it better this year. Red, White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston: 5/5 I don’t know that I have much to add about this book that hasn’t been said by other Cannonballers. The adjective that repeatedly comes to mind for this book is ‘fizzy’. Each of the books in […]

Slow going

Semper Fidelis by Ruth Downie

December 19, 2019 by Manimama Leave a Comment

This was a super slow read. I bought this at a book swap, not realizing it was the fourth book in this series. The series follows a physician in the Roman army under the rule of Hadrian. At one point the medicus, Ruso, was an investigator but has resumed his job as physician. He is stationed in what is now England with a native wife and a habit for getting in trouble. Numerous references are made to his previous issues and problems with authority but […]

From the CBR Book Exchange, some nightmare fodder

American Predator: The Hunt for the Most Meticulous Serial Killer of the 21st Century by Maureen Callahan

December 19, 2019 by Manimama 1 Comment

A big thank you to narfna for this book in the book exchange! I am a big wimp when it comes to horror movies, and can’t handle the idea of re-visiting my previous favorite Stephen King books- but I have a real penchant for true crime. I don’t know why I listen to true crime podcasts without an issue but have to sleep with my head under the covers for a week after thinking too long about  Cujo or the garbage-disposal scene in  Firestarter. It […]

The Trials of Apollo: The Tyrant's Tomb by Rick Riordan

December 19, 2019 by Manimama Leave a Comment

Hoo, boy am I behind in reviews. Here’s to a rapid catch up before year-end! The  Heroes of Olympus  series is a follow-up to Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson books. Book 1,   The Lost Hero, introduces three new characters in to the world of modern-day demigods. The twist is that the main character, Jason Grace, doesn’t seem quite Greek. He has no memory before he wakes up on a school bus for a field trip the Grand Canyon, but fleeting snatches of memory come to him […]

Thank you, narfna!

December 12, 2019 by Manimama 1 Comment

A huge thank you to narfna for these books! I’ve almost finished the first of the two, and can’t wait to start the next! Now if I would only do my 13-book backlog of reviews I could actually let you know how great (and terrifying) this book is.
