She/her. Constantly overworked teacher of Norwegian and English. Geek and reading enthusiast. Married. Mother of a growing boy, born February 2018. Two cats. The Cannonball-veteran (the only participant - as far as I know - who has participated every year since CBRII). Loves fantasy, kissing books and YA. Strongly opinionated about many things. Perpetually behind on reviews. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: Malin's Quick Questions interview.)

Is a New Yorker in London the opposite of an Englishman in New York?

I'm Only Wicked with You by Julie Anne Long

March 19, 2022 by Malin 2 Comments

3.5 stars Hugh Cassidy is an ambitious man. He knows exactly what he wants from life, he’s going to run for mayor of his hometown, from thence devote his life to politics. While his parents may not have been particularly distinguished, they clearly loved one another and raised Hugh and his siblings to believe in hard work, as well being moral and upstanding people. Hugh is in England to try to track down the runaway daughter of a good friend (and as the story progresses […]

Contemporary Eros and Psyche – the hitman and the influencer

Electric Idol by Katee Robert

February 24, 2022 by Malin 1 Comment

Psyche Demetriou wishes her mother would stop trying to push her at the most powerful men in Olympus to arrange a solid business alliance. She’s used to pretending to be shallow and vain, as well as deaf to all the voices who try to tear her down for her social position or body shape. She misses the quiet life before her mother became hugely powerful and sees the good in everyone, to the point where she spends time patching up dangerous hitman Eros at a […]

Starting the year with a sure-fire hit

A Very Beery New Year by Jackie Lau

January 16, 2022 by Malin 1 Comment

Encouraged by his mother to socialise more, introverted software developer Gerald Nakamura goes to his local craft beer bar to sit by the bar, reading a book, not really interacting with anyone except the serving staff. He especially likes exchanging a few words with the pretty and vivacious bartender Kelsey.   Kelsey lives with her rather exasperating grandmother (who just discovered Tik Tok and is determined to become a viral sensation) and works at the bar until she can find something more suitable to her […]

A slightly happier ending to this story of fatal foes than Romeo and Juliet

Fated Blades by Ilona Andrews

December 26, 2021 by Malin Leave a Comment

4.5 stars This was an ARC from Netgalley. My views and opinions are my own. On the alien planet of Rada, most of the powerful families have genetic abilities in some way or another, but the ones born with lethal combat abilities are the fiercest of rivals, and none more so than the Adlers and the Baenas. They are constantly vying to be the most dominant, and now both families are close to discovering the secrets behind their genetic abilities. Matias Baena, head of his […]

Thank you so much, Esme! No, I’m not allergic to nuts.

The Cannonball Book Exchange is one of my favourite end of the year things. I’m not always super enthusiastic about Christmas (because my family frequently descends into shall we call it loudly enthusiastic disagreements?) and because it’s the coldest, darkest time of the year. Plus, as a teacher, the Christmas holidays pretty much means I’m not AT work, but a lot of my spare time, when I’m not having to work to get everything ready FOR Christmas, or tidied up AFTER Christmas, is spent doing […]

I really want a fancy gourmet donut now

Donut Fall in Love by Jackie Lau

December 16, 2021 by Malin 1 Comment

Disclaimer! This was an ARC from Netgalley. My views are my own, and I had already pre-ordered the book before getting the advanced reader copy. Ryan Kwok is grateful for the opportunities he’s been given. While his latest movie, a romantic comedy, isn’t getting the ravest of reviews, he’s fully aware that it’s unusual enough for rom coms to star Asian actors and he’s lucky to have gotten the chance as a romantic leading man. He’d also like to be famous for more than his […]
