The Cannonball-veteran (the only participant - as far as I know - who has participated every year since CBRII). Loves fantasy, kissing books and YA. Strongly opinionated about many things. Perpetually behind on reviews. (Learn more about this Cannonballer: Malin's Quick Questions interview.)

Sometimes NOT being on the run can cause quite a strain on your relationship

January 20, 2015 by Malin 4 Comments

4.5 stars So I’ve already raved at you here AND here about why you should be reading this comic. If you haven’t read it yet (what is wrong with you, do you not like awesome things?), this trade is not the place to start. It collects issues 19-24 of an ongoing story. I’m going to try really hard to review it without spoiling anything major, but tread with caution if you’re not caught up. Marko and Alanna and their hunted little family are laying low […]

A historical romance with wedding planning…and lots of cake

January 20, 2015 by Malin 6 Comments

For eight long years, Miss Clio Whitmore has been waiting for her betrothed, Piers Brandon, now the Marquess of Granville to stop travelling the globe and avoiding her. They’ve barely seen each other since they got engaged, and Piers has never even kissed her. Then there’s the fact that Clio’s frighteningly ambitious mother did everything in her power to make sure Clio was the perfect Marchioness and diplomat’s wife, making sure that her entire life was a training exercise, to the point of starving her […]

A historical romance with double agents

January 19, 2015 by Malin 8 Comments

I’m back! Did you miss me? I finally finished enough work to start catching up on my reviews. Brace yourselves for quite a few in the coming week. This is the fifth book in Joanna Bourne’s Spymasters series, but as the books are written out of chronological order historically speaking, and some overlap (for those who HAVE read the previous books in the series, there’s a really interesting blog post here explaining where the various books fit into the historical time line), it’s not actually that big […]

A wonderful start to 2015

January 4, 2015 by Malin 7 Comments

I had the most wonderful surprise waiting for me when I got back from two weeks in the UK. Well, we had random patches of cat vomit spread around the flat as a loving Christmas gift from our two cats, who we callously abandoned to be fed and looked after by various friends and family members, but I also had a package waiting for me on the living room table. So after feeding the demanding furry dictators we pretend are our pets and cleaning up […]

A depressive author and a sparkly model meet at a disco

December 29, 2014 by Malin Leave a Comment

3.5 stars Ash Winters is a bipolar depressive who once wrote a very clinically acclaimed novel, but now makes a living writing mystery genre fiction, when he´s well enough to do anything at all, that is. He feels like a constant disappointment to his friends and family and cannot remember the last time he felt happy or even content. He´s dragged along to a stag party in Brighton against his better judgement and ends up going home with Darian, an Essex model with a spray […]

Finally a Philippa Gregory book I actually enjoyed

December 27, 2014 by Malin Leave a Comment

Young Jewish girl Hannah Verde flees the Inquisition in Spain with her father after her mother is burned for heresy. They travel through Europe to England, calling themselves “Green” and making a new life for themselves as loyal Christians. Hannah´s father has a printing press and soon his skilled work comes to the attention of scholars like John Dee. While John Dee is visiting their print shop with his patron, Lord Robert Dudley, Hannah has one of her visions, seeing an angel over their shoulder. […]
