**I want to add a quick update because this is cracking me up. Ever since I posted this review, half of the ads I see on websites are in Korean. Apparently just taking the time to look up the correct names of food is enough to convince the bots you’re bilingual!** I’m a little unsure exactly how to review a cookbook, but I’m going to take a crack at it, because this is a good one. I first found Maangchi via her YouTube […]
The Audacity of Exposition
I don’t think the problem is that this isn’t a good book, I think it’s more that it really just isn’t my cup of tea. I kind of had a feeling this would be true, but it was at the library and it sounded like it could be fun so I gave it a go. I’m glad I did, I think this was a fun idea for the author to try, but if this ends up being a series I’ll probably stop here, because it […]
What the Tide Dragged In
I had never heard of this book. It popped up in one of my “What’s Available Now” searches on my library’s eBook site. I was going to use this as my “Cover Art” Bingo square, because I loved the cover and that’s a big part of why I picked it, but then I found out it was shortlisted for the Booker Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award and so I’m using it for “Snubbed,” because this book should have one at least one […]
Sanitized For Your Convenience
OK, so I don’t want to go too far into this yet, because I know it’s for the Book Club in November, and I’ll come back and add to this between now and then, but I want to get my initial impressions down now before they dull in my head. I read this book really early because, basically, I went to my library’s site to put a hold on it now, assuming it would have a wait list. Lo and behold! It was available! So […]
We Walked Beside the Sea After a Day That Perished Silently
An unnamed narrator lives in a small, seaside town in the most Northern point in the United States. It is so far North that “the highways only run South,” and parts of the Bay freeze over in the winter. She lives with her mother and her grandfather. For the last eleven years they have been waiting for her father to walk back out of the Sea. Or perhaps she should go to him because, as her father told her before he left, she is a […]
Aptly Named
Alright, so I want to get two things out before I begin this review in earnest. If you are going to consume this book I highly, highly recommend going with the audiobook. It was recorded in a way that makes it seem more like a radio variety show than an audiobook. Amy makes asides that are not in the text and she also has several “guest stars” she banters with including, but not limited to, Kathleen Turner, Carol Burnett, and Seth Meyers. I’m sure the […]
