Just read it

March 13, 2018 by lowercasesee Leave a Comment

Probably because I’ve read them both in the last month, I kept hearkening back to Lincoln in the Bardo. It certainly isn’t the best comparison, but the themes of grief and loss are persistent in both and very keenly unearthed by both authors. If anything, I went into this one knowing less and with more discovery awaiting me. It didn’t do as much more me (I still really, really loved the experimental nature of Lincoln), but I did really enjoy it. It’s like the book is haunting me. […]

I prefer the screen adaptation

When borrowing ebooks from your local library, always double check the publishing format before you set it on your hold list. Discovering Altered Carbon only came in EPUB and was therefore inaccessible on my Kindle was not fun. But that’s neither here nor there. In between the time when I put this on my hold list and the time I finally got it, I watched the full first season of the show on Netflix and I really enjoyed it! It’s definitely not one of their higher-tier […]

I relate to this food

March 6, 2018 by lowercasesee Leave a Comment

I never expected to personally relate to food. Not to a person eating. Not even to anthropomorphized food a la Sausage Party (why oh why is that my first example .. ). Just to, you know, food. And not even finished food. To a sourdough starter. I came to this realization in a very roundabout way because as I finished this book, gave it its all-too-necessary Goodreads 5 stars, and moved to this review, my first thought was: “This is why I read. This is […]

Wait, why did I think this was a trilogy?

March 6, 2018 by lowercasesee Leave a Comment

Spoiler alert: it’s not. There are more and they’re not out yet. I think I have finally figured out one of the things that really bothers me about this series. I mean, I figured it out last book, but forgot to include it in my review, so I’m telling you now. It’s the swearing. It just doesn’t work. George R. R. Martin can drop a few f-bombs and the see you next Tuesday and it flows with the rhythm of his dialogue. Scott Lynch lacks that […]

Go for it, if you liked the first one

February 28, 2018 by lowercasesee 2 Comments

I guess my super niche sweet spot is genre heist novels because even after my disappointment with the first in the Gentlemen Bastards series, I’m still working through them. I got a lot of feedback on that review, and y’all did warn me that the quality of the books was going to dip, so I was prepared. And lowering my expectations definitely helped! Plus, you know what? This book has cats. The book also introduces two female characters of substance, which was nice to see. There […]

Putting the science in science fiction

February 23, 2018 by lowercasesee 2 Comments

Holy mother moly I loved this book. Plot driven? Check. Genre fiction? Check. New worlds? Check (several checks). Dense complexity to the point of ridiculousness? ALL THE CHECKS. Rebecca is doing okay. She has a job and while she’s not crazy about it, hey, it’s a job. She’s (happily?) married though her husband works all hours and is utterly consumed by the “causality violation device” he’s working on – and don’t you dare call it a time machine. Lately, though, there’s something … off. She can’t […]
