I’ve already forgotten this book

A Shadow Bright and Burning by Jessica Cluess

January 12, 2021 by lowercasesee Leave a Comment

That I remember any character names at all is only because I finished this less than 24 hours ago and haven’t started a new book. This was entirely in one ear and out the other and I only 100%-ed it because I didn’t want to start the year with a DNF. If I’d read this in April, it would be a different story. Victorian England, magic, the chosen one must figure out her power and solve everything … there’s nothing new here. There’s no hook. […]

Feels how the cover looks

Emergency Contact by Mary H.K. Choi

January 12, 2021 by lowercasesee 2 Comments

I’m noting that a frustrating thing about audiobooks is I can’t highlight passages. Realizing that Goodreads preserves my highlights beyond the term of a library loan has been revolutionary for me so I really feel that it’s missing in an audiobook. Ah well. For this book, though, I find it’s rare that a cover matches its book so well. There’s something about the soft pink cover and simple line illustration style, the way Penny and Sam are drawn in such close proximity but the lack of […]

Fun but ultimately forgettable

Kingsbane (Empirium #2) by Claire Legrand

January 8, 2021 by lowercasesee Leave a Comment

Young adult fantasy with a girl standing up in the face of evil is so common that they all start to run together. The Empirium trilogy is different in that we’re looking at two young women protagonists, with the twist that one of them looks more and more like the doom to be stood in the face of, but ultimately this one won’t really stick with me. It’s not bad, it’s just not enough. Last year I got more into audiobooks as I would go for […]

The perfect book for a new year

The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune

January 5, 2021 by lowercasesee 5 Comments

First off, apologies I fell off the grid last year but my one and only New Year’s resolution was to get back to writing these reviews for the books I read. I really appreciate this community and the thoughtful conversations about books, plus the reviews give me my own personal cliff notes on everything I read. But y’all, I’m back with a banger. I almost worry that nothing else I read in 2021 will be up to the same standard as The House In The Cerulean […]

Here there and everywhere

The Glass Hotel by Emily St. John Mandel

The Strange Case of the Alchemist's Daughter by Theodora Goss

Orphans of Empire by Helen Berry

May 21, 2020 by lowercasesee Leave a Comment

This is hopefully my last catch up post. I’ve got one more individual review to write and then I’m up to speed with everything I’ve read so far this year, thank the goodness. Here goes. The Glass Hotel by Emily St. John Mandel Station Eleven is one of my all time favorite books so maybe my expectations were just too high for this one. I enjoyed The Glass Hotel, I really did, but of all the books I’m catching up on, it’s not one I’m singling out for […]

Lady Sherlock makes for great audio books

A Study in Scarlet Women by Sherry Thomas

A Conspiracy in Belgravia by Sherry Thomas

The Hollow of Fear by Sherry Thomas

May 14, 2020 by lowercasesee Leave a Comment

I mentioned having read A Study in Scarlet to my book club in a conversation about classics and someone mentioned having heard of a gender-swapped detective series of which the first book was A Study in Scarlet Women, so we added that for 2020. I accidentally borrowed the audio book instead of the ebook from the library but hey, it’s our nightmare of 2020 and I’m going for a lot of very long walks, why not give it a try. And reader, these are great audio books. […]
