Another book where I appreciated the concept more than the execution. One of my very best friends is a writer (first book being published next spring!!) so this gives me hope because it means that the world of novels still needs talent. Derailed. I may have had some hotel wine. But. This book. Yay? All Our Wrong Todays is a time travel novel that tries to ironically embrace but ultimately can’t get past the fact that the narrator is a massive fuck up who took […]
I’m not sure what I read
The Merry Spinster aside, I’m not a huge short story person. I like something I can dive into that develops over time and establishes characters to come back to, etc. So Sour Heart was probably not going to knock it out of the park for me. I don’t appreciate short stories because I just don’t know what it is I’m meant to be appreciating – what in it I should be looking for. And looking back, I’m not really sure what I read. Full disclosure – this […]
They get better as they go!
In my reviews of book one and book two, I was pretty forthcoming with my disappointment – they were better than most, but fell far short of the greatness I knew was coming later in her career. Y’all were sweet and let me know that if I didn’t like these, I should really call the whole thing off, but for reasons that escape me I ploughed on through. And hey, I’m not totally sad I did. Maybe it’s because I don’t remember the first two […]
Book about memory sure faded fast
It’s a short read, I blew through it in less than a morning – and it stayed with me for about as long. There’s a nugget of a neat idea here, but the execution was sorely lacking. It’s an Art Deco-era science fiction world in which memories can be physically removed from the brain and housed in a copy. This copy perpetually relives that memory until it gradually fades and eventually expires. Most of these copies (memories – also called Mems) are housed in a […]
Against my better judgement
You ever read a book and you’re like YES I KNOW it’s NOT GOOD but I LIKE IT so SHOVE OFF? Because that’s me and this series. Rebel of the Sands is basically YA madlibs. __(female name)__, a young girl with a tragic past, unknowingly has the power to __(fart noise)__, but can she master it in time to save her __(home)__ while falling in love with __(male name)__, the __(nobility)__ that should be her enemy?! But it’s YA madlibs I actually, if regretfully, enjoy reading! […]
A little too late for CBR book club
I sing the praises of my local library but sometimes I don’t get things quite when I would like – hence, getting and finishing Kindred slightly after the CBR book club. I am sorry I didn’t get to join the discussion, but I am so happy I finally had the push to read this one. Lord knows how or why, but I had no idea of what this book was going to be about. The cover doesn’t really do the book justice – this looks like it’s […]
