On its face, The Queen of the Tearling is your standard young adult fare – a young queen, a handsome and mysterious love interest, emerging magic, a kingdom that must be saved. I’m not dismissing YA novels when I say this, but the Tearling series is so much more. These books are suitable for high schoolers, but also eminently rereadable and enjoyable for those of us celebrating our ten+ year reunions. Think late Harry Potter range. But the good ones. Kelsea Raleigh has known her whole life […]
Bad Beauty and the Beast fanfic
I read through some of y’alls reviews and I apologize up front because I’ve been really looking forward to writing this review about how laughably awful I find these books. I’ll include a few more disclaimers. I think these books are trash and I do this to myself because this is the second time I’ve read these series and that’s like one and a half times too many. But not only did I read all three, I reread them. I have only myself to blame for […]
Read this with a Michael Scott “NOOOOOOO”
If you came here from the mothership and you read it regularly, you know that Korean film can be … interesting. The Vegetarian is like that but a book and I wanted so hard to NOPE right out of there but it was short and I was as intrigued as I was horrified which is I guess another way to describe Korean film. I don’t really recommend this book unless you enjoy staring wide-eyed at the world and saying on repeat, “What the FUCK did I […]
Can a book be boring AND fascinating?
The premise of this book is just … bafflingly dull. It’s the 1950s and an English butler takes a few days off work to drive through the countryside and think back on his decades of service. Like Ishiguro’s other books, there is something staid about the writing style, it’s almost stereotypical British stiff upper lip (I would know, I was just in London, HEYO!) At the same time, it somehow draws you in and I can’t put my finger on what exactly does it. Mr […]
Capers are better with magic
After The Prophecy Con was just The Palace Job, rebooted, The Paladin Caper manages to be something new and aaaaaah I love it. I fully recognize that I love these books more than they truly deserve but I don’t care because they are FUN goddammit and sometimes that’s all you need. The OMG cliffhanger at the end of the last book is pretty predictably resolved and I’m okay with it. You won’t be mad either, trust me. This is of course another book in which our trusty crew […]
A lively book about death
Yeah, I don’t think I would want to know when I would die. This book chronicles the story of the four Gold children, raised in New York City, who are quite young when they hear from somebody who heard from somebody that there’s a witch woman who can tell you the precise day when you will die. Being children – especially being a group of children, always another one there to egg you on – they visit her and, one by one, come out … […]
