The black and white femme fatale cover and the Moroccan setting combine to inspire some old Hollywood nostalgia, but Tangerine tries to leverage that to trick you into thinking there’s a similar standard of quality in the book. I’m still grateful to Leedock’s review for setting my expectations but yikes this just wasn’t that good. To add insult to injury, Morocco is a DREAM destination for me, but to read Tangerine all you’d get is that it’s hot, humid, and crowded. There’s nothing distinct about the Moroccan […]
Super by the numbers
There’s very little objectively wrong with The Madwoman Upstairs and it is a pleasant, even fun, read. The story goes pretty much exactly where you expect it to and it isn’t a bad ride, there just isn’t really anything in here that elevates it. As for plot, our main character (I’ve already forgotten her name, sorry) is the last descendant of the Bronte family, through, like, their dad’s sibling or something. Her own father passed away when she was a teenager and was considered to have […]
Girl On The Train, by a dude
Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. A woman witness a horrify crime, but she’s an alcoholic with a tragic, unstable past and no one believes her. She tries to investigate on her own, but she’s got only her own shaky memory to go on and the cops just wish she would go away. In the end she’s proven right all along. I mean, right? The agoraphobia of the main character is really all that differentiates it from the rest of the recent “unstable […]
A wonderfully childlike story
This book is straight-up magical. I’ve read it before, I think right around the time I first got a kindle, and I’ve seen (and loved) the movie and yet somehow I let this story fall by the wayside. But the audiobook fell into my lap and it seemed like a perfect Bingo choice and I am so grateful for all of these elements that brought Coraline back into my life. Neil Gaiman has brought this little girl to life in spectacular fashion. The book is written […]
Abundantly tedious
This was a book I 100% only read because of bingo. I’m not sure it would have crossed my radar to read otherwise, what with the plethora of material out there. So there’s that. If you’re tempted to go for it, let me from the get-go recommend the audio book. It’s read by Tim Curry, y’all. That’s right. Dr. Frankenfurter, Long John Silver, is there narrating your Jules Verne. It’s wonderful. And it’s perfect for some 1.25x speed. When I went to look for an […]
All the science of The Martian, less of the fun
I’ll start this by saying, I really did genuinely enjoy Artemis. It’s just that The Martian set the bar really damn high. Anyone with a passing understanding of the first book or movie knows what they’re getting into – snappy wit, detailed technical science, and insane problems with even crazier solutions. Artemis delivers on every single score, seriously. But somehow a breakneck story about a heist ON THE MOON just started to drag. Weir creates these wonderful worlds just a few technological leaps ahead of our own. Here, […]
