Gonna buy it and reread it

November 15, 2018 by lowercasesee Leave a Comment

Lord all mighty this was a dense one. I guess I’ve gotten accustomed to novelized non-fiction a la Erik Larsen because I did not anticipate the depths into which I was diving. Reading this is like reading a textbook. There’s a lot to absorb and my reading time was curtailed by its library due date (and the increasing load of loans I’ve been accumulating). It’s an incredible work of research and I’m going to reread it, it’s just a lot. Literally 25% of the book […]

YA sequel that holds up to the first

November 8, 2018 by lowercasesee Leave a Comment

Unfortunately, it seems to have become a bit of a given in publishing that sequels are generally a let-down. Maybe it’s a function of the first being more popular than anticipated and the second being rushed, but there seems to be taken for granted a drop in quality. Fortunately, in her latest series Strange the Dreamer, Laini Taylor holds ground. Another unfortunate reality of modern publishing is that anything with a teenage protagonist becomes “young adult”. There are definitely some themes in here that are too […]

This one IS a novel

November 6, 2018 by lowercasesee 1 Comment

Turns out I am very bad about learning much about the book I am going to read. There have been two books so far this year that I assumed would be novels, only to learn a handful of pages in that they were in fact nonfiction. Then there’s The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane, which I thought would be nonfiction and was, go figure, a novel. In my defense, it was one of two books recommended simultaneously by my mother and the other, Killers of the Flower […]

I couldn’t even remember the title

October 31, 2018 by lowercasesee Leave a Comment

I’m honestly a little impressed that Atkinson managed to take a novel about World War II and Cold War espionage and make it downright forgettable. It’s one of those nested novels, taking place in three distinct time periods and each one flashing back to the other. If you’re anything like me, you’ll soon lose the ability to tell the various characters apart. Also, thanks so much all y’all for the congratulations 🙂 I’m still firmly ensconced in cloud nine and I’m afraid my reading and […]

Reunited and it feels so good

October 26, 2018 by lowercasesee 5 Comments

Had a bit of a dip in productivity there! I wasted way too long trying to read a book that was just too boring (gave up, no review) and then … I GOT ENGAGED! Yeah buddy your lowercase reviewer is getting HITCHED. So yes, I am shouting it from every rooftop I can find. He’s the best. We so happy. I’ve only heard my mother say “Took you long enough” once. Everything is wonderful. Me, IRL: But anyway. Y’all didn’t come here for my personal […]

And yet I’m going to read the third one

October 19, 2018 by lowercasesee 1 Comment

On the one hand I ate this book up. Started it and finished it in a single day. On the other hand, I very clearly know that this is not a well-written book. The events are eye-scortchingly INSANE and the plot is fast-paced but man is this going to be so much better as a movie. Yes, I still need to see the first one. But in my head this kind of conspicuous consumption works much better in a visual medium. One of my biggest […]
