Somehow Douglas Adams + Neil Gaiman doesn’t work

Don't Panic by Neil Gaiman

January 3, 2019 by lowercasesee 1 Comment

On the surface, this book was made for me. A biography of Douglas Adams and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, as taken down by Neil Gaiman. It was like someone reached into my head and wrote out my wildest dreams. And look at that cover! I am so easily sold with a good cover, y’all. There is so much that this book could have been and yet it wasn’t. I just didn’t feel this book. I appreciated Gaiman writing about Adams in the style of […]

I do this to myself, eyes wide open

December 18, 2018 by lowercasesee Leave a Comment

I’ve laid out my feelings on Sarah J. Maas books. And I feel like – unlike with the Court of Thorns and Roses – the consensus here about Throne of Glass is pretty clear. They nestle comfortably somewhere just below a love/hate. It would take more energy than they’re worth to either love or hate them, but they are the good of bad writing. You don’t want to read them, but you also can’t put them down. And so it is with Tower of Dawn. I’m not going to […]

The story deserves a better book

December 17, 2018 by lowercasesee Leave a Comment

The story here is dark and horrifying and fascinating. It reads almost unbelievable but it is entirely 100% true. In the beginning of the 20th century, the Osage people owned both the land and the head rights in Oklahoma when oil was discovered under their feet. Despite a deeply unfair system, they successfully argued to keep the head rights and rent the land, skyrocketing to become the richest people per capita in the country. And, because of evil and cunning and the loopholes built into […]

It’s only insufferable to start

December 13, 2018 by lowercasesee Leave a Comment

In the beginning, I did not like this book. One of the main characters is a giant puppy but I felt like I was being slapped in the face with pretentiousness in every paragraph. None of the characters had names. The narrator was a writer describing all her writer friends – and talking endlessly about famous writers. Writers writing about writers writing about writers just never ends well. But somewhere, and I’m not sure where, I turned the corner. It must have been the dog. […]

Luvvie, I feel you so hard

December 4, 2018 by lowercasesee 1 Comment

Previous reviewer Blingle Bells called this book “Getting woke for beginners” and yeah, they’re not wrong. This book would be a great gift for the wavering independent (or maybe even centrist conservative) in your life. Ajayi lays out a lot of the basics of institutional racism and sexism in ways that are veeeery difficult to argue or play devil’s advocate with (although screw people who play devil’s advocate – the devil does not need an advocate, much less you.) Luvvie Ajayi has written the book […]

It’s right there in the title

November 29, 2018 by lowercasesee 1 Comment

Before I get into this review, as I went to the Amazon page for the link, I scrolled down and saw the “Frequently Bought With” and it’s … Educated and Becoming. I am absolutely fascinated that this is the most common combination with this book. Who are you people? Do I want to know you or avoid you? My Sister, the Serial Killer is an absolutely incredible debut novel, massive props to Oyinkan Braithwaite. There’s a mild suspension of disbelief for this book (she makes her sister out […]
