More of this, please!

Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

November 18, 2019 by lowercasesee Leave a Comment

Oh god I’m so behind. I’ve got three more reviews to write after this one and I’m almost done with a fourth book how did I let this happen. Ahhhhhh. But seriously, more of this please. Give me all the non-Euro-centric YA fantasy you got and I will eat it up. Gods of Jade and Shadow dives deep into Mexican-Mayan mythology and I loved literally every second of it. A friend of mine started reading it and I was like OH MY GOD FINISH SOONER SO […]

I don’t know who this is for (but it’s not me)

Three Women by Lisa Taddeo

November 12, 2019 by lowercasesee Leave a Comment

I finished this book for a book club meeting I didn’t even make it to but I think I’m narrowing down on the most common source for my most-disliked recommended books (it’s Vox.com). I’ll just take these with a grain of salt from now on because this one was not one I really enjoyed. I just never got into it. Taddeo is telling three stories of three real women but I never understood why. They’re also told in alternating chapters which is discombobulating and as much […]

At least it was free

Bringing Down the Duke by Evie Dunmore

November 7, 2019 by lowercasesee Leave a Comment

When I post a review, I always search the media library to see if someone else has uploaded a cover photo so I don’t have to. Turns out, every single cover image Cannonballers have tagged with the word “duke” is a bodice ripper/romance novel (try it if you don’t believe me). Bringing Down the Duke is more McFluffy than McSteamy but it still fits the mold. It’s still not my preferred genre but I got the book for free so who am I to complain. Evie […]

So unmemorable I forgot I read it

The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears by Dinaw Mengestu

November 1, 2019 by lowercasesee 2 Comments

This book is honestly so blah I kind of forgot I read it (not 100% the book’s fault, we pulled off a frankly spectacular wedding last weekend so I’ve been a little distracted) (did y’all catch that? WE GOT MARRIED AND IT WAS PERFECT OMG) I felt like I should have been fascinated by this book, but it just didn’t grab me. The whole book just kind of floated by. Our narrator is Sepha Stephanos, living in Washington, D.C., after fleeing the Ethopian Revolution as a […]

It’s a bloodydamn slog

Dark Age by Pierce Brown

October 30, 2019 by lowercasesee 2 Comments

I’m starting to think that Pierce Brown should maybe have left well-enough alone with his Red Rising “trilogy”. I also can’t help but notice that his name is gaining more and more prominence on the covers as the series progresses. Not saying that’s bad, just something to keep an eye on. But seriously, was there always this much war in these books? I very quickly did not look forward to reading this, and I love this series. I am a huge advocate of Red Rising and I’m about […]

Trick Mirror by Jia Tolentino

October 17, 2019 by lowercasesee 3 Comments

I’m on my work computer so I won’t get into the nitty gritty of my responses to some of this text but suffice to say that overall I really, really liked this essay collection. Do you enjoy feminist considerations of pop culture and our modern world, presented with wit and candor? Then grab Trick Mirror and be prepared to be both delighted and enraged (I mean, it’s feminist considerations of pop culture and our modern world, of course you’re going to be enraged). There are broad swaths of […]
