Method Acting

“I’m saying I think we could take care of each other.”

Method Acting by Adele Buck

June 16, 2021 by llamareadsbooks Leave a Comment

I absolutely adored Adele Buck’s first book so I was very eager to see where the next book in the series would take us. This one doesn’t focus as much on the behind the scenes bits of acting, but it does have a delightfully steamy opposites-attract couple! Alicia is finishing up a run in Romeo & Juliet at the Folger’s in D.C. and contemplating her next steps. But what’s not on her plan is getting insulted by Colin, a STEAM lobbyist, at one of the […]

“We look after each other.”

The Companion by E.E. Ottoman

June 15, 2021 by llamareadsbooks 2 Comments

This book is the equivalent of drinking a hot cup of tea while sitting on a screened-in porch full of plants: it’s as cozy, gentle and relaxing as the cover suggests. Demoralized by the publishing industry in late 1940s New York City, Madeline accepts an invitation to be a companion for Victor in upstate New York. He’s a mystery writer who inherited a large house and enough money where he never has to leave it: he gets his groceries and newspaper delivered. But spending all […]

Love in Color

“I’m not distracted. I’m focused on what matters most.”

Love in Color by Bolu Babalola

June 14, 2021 by llamareadsbooks 2 Comments

I adore fairy tale retellings and I was already familiar with the author from following her on Twitter, so of course I wanted to read this book. Add in the gorgeous cover art and I was completely sold. And this anthology is excellent, full of thoughtfully reimagined tales with strong women and varied settings, and how love unites us all. “So, what was our beginning? When we first met? When we first fell in love? But falling in love is continuous and perpetual, an activity […]

The Helm of Midnight

“Breaking takes less effort than building, that is the way of the world.”

The Helm of Midnight by Marina J. Lostetter

June 12, 2021 by llamareadsbooks 2 Comments

I’ll be honest that I almost didn’t pick up this book. Neither the cover nor the blurb really grabbed me, but I reconsidered when I started hearing other reviewers talk about the book. Character-driven? Fascinating world-building? Serial killer mystery? Check, check, check. And while this is the first book in a trilogy, there’s no cliffhanger ending and there’s a good balance between what’s resolved and what’s still left to explore. Krona, a Regulator usually responsible for helping retrieve lost enchanted objects, is a bit bored […]

I'm Waiting For You

A science fiction anthology about time and the power of hope

I'm Waiting for You and Other Stories by Kim Bo-young

June 11, 2021 by llamareadsbooks Leave a Comment

This book consists of two pairs of stories by a South Korean author known for her speculative fiction. Both deal with a sort of time-is-relative theory, though in very different ways. The first and last stories are from the perspective of an engaged couple. One is traveling back from Alpha Centauri, so rather than wait the few years for her to return, the other decides to board a spaceship that’ll accelerate up to light speed – meaning that it’ll only be a few months for […]

Twice Shy

Emotionally satisfying and hilarious rom-com

Twice Shy by Sarah Hogle

June 9, 2021 by llamareadsbooks 3 Comments

After seeing some of my favorite Twitter romance readers rave about Sarah Hogle’s first book, I couldn’t resist picking this one up, even before I read (and loved!) her debut. And wow, while it’s completely different in tone from the first, this is an emotionally satisfying rom com chockfull of tropes – forced proximity, grumpy/sunshine, slow burn, with a cinnamon roll hero. “Somewhere far above the clouds, glittering in stars and nebulae, a neon sign spins leisurely outside a cheerful little haven where everything always […]
