Dark Stars

A wide variety of horror from Lovecraftian to historically inspired

Dark Stars by John F.D. Taff

April 12, 2022 by llamareadsbooks Leave a Comment

I’ve said it before, but I love anthologies for the opportunity to speed date a variety of authors. While I’ve been reading more horror lately, it’s not a genre where I’m familiar with a lot of authors, so I jumped on the chance to read this anthology. In that respect, it was a complete success as I found several new authors! “In classes, I was often told that, according to Henry James, my taste for the works of Edgar Allan Poe was ‘the mark of […]

Saint Death's Daughter

Necromantically animated mice, revenant nannies, and toe bones as love tokens

Saint Death's Daughter by C. S. E. Cooney

April 12, 2022 by llamareadsbooks 2 Comments

This book is incredibly indescribable. It’s macabre, joyful, and heartrending by turns and utterly unafraid to immerse the reader in an astonishingly detailed (and very queer) fantasy world, full of necromantically animated mice, revenant nannies, and toe bones as love tokens. Miscellaneous (Lanie) is the youngest of a long line of creatively named Stones in Liriat, a family with a colorful history and strong ties to the royals. Lanie is a necromancer, born with an allergy to violence. Given her parents’ jobs as royal executioner […]

Finding Forever on Their Island Paradise

‘Do you want the real answer to that? Or the one that’s going to keep everything the way it is?’

Finding Forever on Their Island Paradise by Therese Beharrie

April 7, 2022 by llamareadsbooks 2 Comments

Therese Beharrie’s books always melt me into a pile of heart-eyed goo. They bring the feels, the humor, and the tenderness, and always leave me with a smile on my face! All Morgan wants to do is help her grandmother host her wedding on Penguin Island, where she’s lived for most of her life. If only that pesky rich developer who’s bought the community would listen to her compromise! While Elliott barely gets along with his family, when his brother asked him to take over […]

Adorable, funny polyam road trip romance

Shake Things Up by Skye Kilaen

April 6, 2022 by llamareadsbooks Leave a Comment

The first book of this author’s I ever picked up was Get it Right, the first in this series, and that prompted me to binge, uh, pretty much everything else by her. So of course I was ridiculously excited for the next book in the series and even more excited when I heard it was a polyam road trip romance! While this is the second in a series, it can easily be read as a standalone. After getting fired from her job, the last thing […]

Gouda Friends

Doesn’t get any feta than this!

Gouda Friends by Cathy Yardley

April 5, 2022 by llamareadsbooks Leave a Comment

After adoring Love, Comment, Subscribe, I knew I had to read the next book in the series ASAP. Friends to lovers is a favorite trope of mine, and seeing that it involved two other members of the Nerd Herd? I was so excited! And it definitely lived up to the first book, full of humor, romance and a thoughtful exploration of some of the hurdles facing late 20-somethings. While this is the second in a series, it can be read as a standalone. “I am […]

The Blood Trials

“We do not bend. We do not break. We do not bow. We do not yield.”

The Blood Trials by N. E. Davenport

April 4, 2022 by llamareadsbooks 2 Comments

WOW. I was initially drawn to the cover (do I have a thing for hot strong women holding pointy weapons on covers? yes, yes I do) and intrigued by the blurb, but I tried to keep my expectations low. That was completely unnecessary as this is easily one of my favorite books so far this year. Full of action, a flawed-but-trying heroine, and lots of twisty intrigue, it’s impossible to put down. The night before she graduates from the Mareen Republic’s premier military academy, Ikenna […]
