I Will Be Suprised If This Trilogy Does Not Become an Award Magnet

The Bear and the Nightingale (Winternight Trilogy Book 1) by Katherine Arden

The Girl in the Tower (Winternight Trilogy Book 2) by Katherine Arden

The Winter of the Witch (Winternight Trilogy Book 3) by Katherine Arden

I’ve been a little bit neglectful – I finished this series several weeks ago, but I’ve only now found the time to write about it. I was actually spurred on a bit by the announcement of the Hugo Award nominees, where I discovered that the author, Katherine Arden, has been nominated for a John W. Campbell Award for the second year running. So I felt now would be a good time to finish my write up. It’s no wonder that Arden has been nominated again, […]

Eleven Centuries of History – One Easy Listen

Ghost Empire by Richard Fidler

March 24, 2019 by LittlePlat Leave a Comment

I have to admit, Audible’s recommendations have made a turn for the better in the last few months. I’m still getting the odd self-help book and re-hashed Kindle purchase, but on the whole, I think they’ve finally figured out what I like to listen to. My audiobook preferences differ from my ‘read-book’ preferences in that I tend to favour non-fiction with a strong, clear narrative. Complex fiction, I’ve found, don’t suit me well, as I have to expend too much energy trying to follow along […]

A Captivating Memoir About Teaching Music in Afghanistan

Danger Music by Eddie Ayres

February 3, 2019 by LittlePlat 1 Comment

Oh no, this one ended up being much longer than I planned. And I still don’t think I’ve said everything that needs to be said about this book. Usually, when you pick up a memoir, you expect that the author and their life will be the main focus of the book. But this doesn’t always have to be the case; a few months ago, I reviewed Rick Morton’s 100 Years of Dirt, which bent this mould out of shape a bit by including the author’s […]

So Much More Than Just Textbook Biology

Gene Machine: The Race to Decipher the Secrets of the Ribosome by Venki Ramakrishnan

January 26, 2019 by LittlePlat Leave a Comment

“So I don’t subscribe to the heroic narrative of science. Rather, some of us are fortunate enough to be the agents of important discoveries that would have been made anyway, sometimes not even that much later. “   I think this quote in particular sums up why I loved this book and its author so much. I am aware from both media portrayals of science and from discussing my work with friends and family that the public perception of the scientific process is […]

Fly Evangelist

November 30, 2018 by LittlePlat Leave a Comment

You lot – yes, you lot over there, pouring all over the cute cat and puppy pictures on the internet? All those bloody memes? Have you ever stopped to think that there was more to fawning over cute and cuddly mammals? Have you ever considered diverting at least some of your attention in the direction of the poor, neglected invertebrates? Erin McAlister’s book ‘The Secret Life of Flies’ is like an Evangelist’s pamphlet for Diptera. She’s here to tell you fly stories, and hopefully, by […]

There May Be No Supernatural Shenanigans, but That Doesn’t Make the Real History Less Engrossing.

November 28, 2018 by LittlePlat 2 Comments

A few weeks ago, something shocking occurred when I went to check my credits on Audible. Usually, their recommended section either accidentally recommends books I’ve already read, or throws me some kind of self-help book – which, honestly, they probably inflict these on everybody. But this time they got it right – they gave me a recommendation off their new release list that wasn’t something I was already familiar with. And it turned out to be really damned good! I wasn’t sure of how to […]
