A Plague — and a Madman in a Masquerade

Physicians of Vilnoc by Lois McMaster Bujold

Masquerade in Lodi by Lois McMaster Bujold

January 31, 2021 by LittlePlat 2 Comments

Blink and you miss ‘em… Lois McMaster Bujold has released two Penric and Desdemona novellas in the past year when I wasn’t paying attention. I don’t know how these releases keep on passing me by, I really don’t. Usually, these novellas are mostly light-hearted fun, but the first one, The Physicians of Vilnoc, might be a little uncomfortably timely, as it revolves around a plague. Looking at the publication dates, I don’t think Bujold did this on purpose, as she would have started writing this […]

Chaotic, Cruel Fairy Stories

Princess Floralinda and the Forty-Flight Tower by Tamsyn Muir

January 12, 2021 by LittlePlat 5 Comments

Princess Floralinda and the Forty-Flight Tower was not at all what I expected. But in retrospect, I’ve come to conclude that my expectations may have been a bit daft. Based on the title and some choice pull quotes, I thought I might be getting a bit of a gently inverted fairy tale. More fool me. This is Tamsyn Muir we’re speaking of here. The author of the Locked Tomb series, whose bread and butter is messy, fucked up sort of sapphic relationships in gruesome settings. […]

Hwæt? Bro!

Beowulf: A New Translation by Maria Dahvana Headley

January 9, 2021 by LittlePlat 7 Comments

I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m not much one for reading poetry. I don’t know if I have some sort of mental tone-deafness or some other strange issue, but I can never get the cadence and tone right in my head. It has to be read aloud. Now while this is something that I can do myself, I prefer having poetry read to me. This was something Maria Dahvana Headley had in mind when she was working on a more contemporary translation of […]

Boy Bites Man

Man Tiger (Lelaki Harimau) by Eka Kurniawan

January 7, 2021 by LittlePlat Leave a Comment

Man Tiger starts out with a killer opening line: On the evening Margio killed Anwar Sadat, Kyai Jahro was blissfully busy with his fishpond. This crime leaves the populace of a small Indonesian fishing village in shock—Margio, barely twenty, is a well known and well-liked kid. Margio has never been prone to violence. Some folks speculate that with the recent deaths of both his little sister and his father, the boy possibly just snapped. But why was Anwar Sadat the target of his violence? And […]

There’s No Need to Worry, ElCicco, I Got Them Eventually!

January 4, 2021 by LittlePlat 1 Comment

Books, Books Physical Books! Thanks so much, @ElCicco! I don’t have very many actual books here with me as an expatriate right now, so this is all very exciting. I will have to do a Yoon Ha Lee 3 in 1 review, I think. And I love that you added a little history surprise for me there—the photos are lovely!   (So I flicked through and I thought I might find her: Rachel Carson!) Like, last year, unfortunately, I haven’t been able to write up […]

The Sandman (Audio Production) by Neil Gaiman

December 9, 2020 by LittlePlat Leave a Comment

Neil Gaiman refuses to call this an audiobook. And look, he’s not half wrong, it’s more of an audio play than anything else. But for the purpose of reviews, I’m going to treat this as a book. And no matter how we characterise it, this is a bloody marvellous piece of work, and one of the most pleasantly surprising things to come out of 2020. The premise is a bit daunting when you think about it: a comic book is a very visual medium that […]
