Blood, Sweat & Chrome: The Wild and True Story of Mad Max: Fury Road by Kyle Buchanan

December 18, 2022 by LittlePlat Leave a Comment

Aw hell yes! I love a good oral history. And I especially love a good oral history about a subject based on popular culture, as pop culture inherently generates a lot of fodder for the telling. And as many people here are probably  aware, I adore a great action film. Mad Max: Fury Road has been one of my favourites from the last decade or so. It is not often that we see a sequel—let alone a long belated one!—see so much critical acclaim. But […]

The House in the Cerulean Sea, by TJ Klune

December 16, 2022 by LittlePlat 1 Comment

This was a gift from last year’s book exchange, and while I finished it a while back, I think I put off reviewing it because I prioritised all the Hugo works for Bingo instead; I had a harder time fitting this into my scorecard calculus! What this did mean though is that I had some extra time to read through a second time around. And would you believe it was even more wonderful the second time? At the start of The House in the Cerulean […]

Thank You andtheIToldYouSos, and Happy Holidays!

December 16, 2022 by LittlePlat Leave a Comment

Oh my God, I love it! Thank you andtheIToldYouSos! I know I am a bit of a pain when it comes to the book exchange because I don’t really leave much detail as to what to get me—decisions are hard! But I love everything here from the two new authors that I have never read before, the extraterrestrial-themed cards and mask, the Spice Girls card(!) And the friendship bracelets! (And they did they put me in mind of a certain someone, was that deliberate?) I […]

The Jasmine Throne by Tasha Suri

November 9, 2022 by LittlePlat 2 Comments

Tasha Suri is another new author for me. I think I have been doing pretty well this year sussing these out, especially in the fantasy genre. And I have to say, Suri does not disappoint with The Jasmine Throne. I think its going to be one of my favorites of the year.  The Jasmine Throne is a very woman-centred story. If I had to pick a main character, I think Priya pull ahead to get her nose in front. Priya is a kitchen maid in […]

A Surprise, to Be Sure, but a Welcome One

The Sandman Act II (Audio Production) by Neil Gaiman; Dick Maggs

The Sandman Act III (Audio Production) by Neil Gaiman; Dick Maggs

November 8, 2022 by LittlePlat 6 Comments

As I admitted during my review of The Sandman Act I, I am aware that these productions are really pushing the limits of what an audiobook is. But since they are such close adaptions of the original graphic novels, and are tied together with heavy use of a narrator (Gaiman himself), I think it is fair to say that they still count.  I loved Act I very much, but I really didn’t get around to listening to Act II until earlier this year, as part […]

The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart

October 30, 2022 by LittlePlat Leave a Comment

So it looks like after Winter’s Orbit,  I’ve jumped straight into more political fiction! Rather than sci-fi, this one is fantasy, and rather than an empire spanning cluster of planets, we have an empire spanning an archipelago. A sort of fantasy Moluccas, if you will. And while this is not a romance, it does have one of the very cutest animal sidekicks I’ve come across in a long while The empire of The Bone Shard Daughter is ruled by a man who favours tight control […]
