He Who Drowned the World by Shelley Parker-Chan

December 26, 2023 by LittlePlat 1 Comment

There will be spoilers from She Who Became the Sun here, be warned.  He Who Drowned the World was one of my more anticipated reads this year, and Emmalita was so very kind and sent me a copy. So, I owe it to squeeze this review in before the year’s end.  She Who Became the Sun was an absolutely fantastic book that really put Shelly Parker-Chan on the map. But it was also a book that was eager to give you a gut punch. Or […]

GENTLEMAN THIS IS DEMOCRACY MANIFEST

Carnage: A succulent Chinese meal, Mr Rent-a-Kill, and the Australian Manson Murders by Mark Dapin

December 26, 2023 by LittlePlat 4 Comments

A true crime jaunt about a meme-man. Democracy Manifest/Succulent Chinese Meal Guy is a rather famous (and ludicrous) arrest video taken in Australia in the early 90’s. If you have never seen the video in question, I’ll pop in here now for your viewing pleasure. While notable at the time, it became absolute meme fodder about ten years ago when someone decided to put it online.  And once you watch the video, you’ll have no doubt as to why this happened. The man being arrested […]

Best Re-Read to Date! Re-Read with Friends!

Blindsight by Peter Watts

December 23, 2023 by LittlePlat Leave a Comment

Dear God, there are many days left in the year as there are books I need to review to complete a half cannonball… Let’s see how I go. Blindsight This is hard, depressing science fiction at its best, and one that certainly left a mark on me when I first came across it about 10 years ago. I hadn’t really thought about giving a re-read until recently when I was sitting at Book Club one evening and it was time to play the game of […]

Tak Ada Peluru Ajaib / There is No Magic Bullet

Kanker, Biografi Suatu Penyakit by Siddharta Mukherjee; Rahmat Purwono

December 21, 2023 by LittlePlat Leave a Comment

(The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer) It’s now edging onto the last part of the year, and I want to mention my most significant (read: stupid) reading challenge. I had some downtime in Australia earlier this year, and I told myself I was going to try to read something in Indonesian again. That something turned out to be an Indonesian translation of The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer. Or Kanker: Biografi Suatu Penyakit (Cancer: Biography of a Disease). Why this […]

Book Exchange Time —Thank You Rev Girl Utena!

December 18, 2023 by LittlePlat 1 Comment

Thank you so much for these, RevGirl Utena! This looks like a very fun trip outside of my regular genres! I had only heard of Seven Year Slip (covered by Snoopy) prior to this, so The Personal Librarian and The Book of Lost Names are going to be surprises!   The socks are also super welcome; I just busted my winter socks I purchased in Iceland a few years back (sob!) So these will work with the Dr Martens, I feel: My next step, after not […]

What it Means to be My Favourite Alien

Translation State by Ann Leckie

December 9, 2023 by LittlePlat 8 Comments

Have you ever experienced so much anticipation for a book that it you nearly squealed in glee? This is me with Ann Leckie’s Translation State. If Translation State had just been a sequel to her Imperial Radch Trilogy, it would still have been intriguing enough to check out. But Translation State is not just a follow-up to the Radch books—it’s a book that heavily features the Presgr Translators! To keep things vague for anyone who hasn’t yet read the Radch books (and you should), the […]
