Reading has slowed down a bit lately, but I won't let that stop me!

A Tale of a Brooklyn Bruja with some Alice in Wonderland Energy

Labyrinth Lost by Zoraida Córdova

December 9, 2019 by Lisa Bee Leave a Comment

This YA novel is a familiar sort of adventure, but in a new a refreshing setting. It hits all the right beats and turns in the story in an efficient and effective manner. I don’t know about anyone else, but I knew what I was getting into when I picked this one up, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it also means the experience of the read itself falls squarely in the middle-of-the-road for me. Labyrinth Lost follows the story of teenage Alejandra […]

Another One!

Wayward Son by Rainbow Rowell

November 9, 2019 by Lisa Bee Leave a Comment

After my friend got me a copy of Carry On for my birthday, I read it immediately, and naturally I loved it. It had all my favourite tropes: magic, vampires, enemies-to-friends-to-lovers, and-they-were-roommates, spoofing on the concept of a chosen-one, etc etc. I loved the characters and how it didn’t take itself too seriously, while still having a strong heart and emotions within it. This follow-up novel took hold of me with my love for these characters once again, but story-wise it certainly takes a dip: […]

First Love and Losing Faith

Blankets by Craig Thompson

October 23, 2019 by Lisa Bee Leave a Comment

CBR11 Bingo Square: Banned Books I remember reading Blankets a number of years ago, and if I recall correctly, I liked certain aspects but didn’t love it. But having a copy on my shelves, I decided to re-visit it for my Banned Books square, after learning that both this novel and Alison Bechdel’s Fun Home were challenged and subsequently removed from the public library in Marshall, Missouri, after complaints that the novels were “pornographic” and might be read by children. This began a series of […]

A Cyclical Story that Works for the Most Part

Slade House by David Mitchell

October 15, 2019 by Lisa Bee Leave a Comment

Why not read a book about an eerie house during this spooky month of October? Turns out, I didn’t realize that this short novel was an offshoot story from David Mitchell’s larger universe of The Bone Clocks. I can’t help but feel like maybe had I already read The Bone Clocks I would have enjoyed Slade House more, but as a story itself it isn’t bad, and definitely made me interested to pick up the original book that this is a companion to because of […]

Talking Without Speaking, Hearing Without Listening

Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng

September 30, 2019 by Lisa Bee Leave a Comment

CBR11 Bingo Square: Birthday Originally I wanted to read Celeste Ng’s Little Fires Everywhere for the birthday bingo square, but since our library had this book available first, I figured it was worth a read. And it certainly hit on a few soft spots in my heart along the way. Emotions? Yeah, I have those in spades, and this book absolutely brought some of them out. Everything I Never Told You centers on a mixed-race Chinese American family named the Lee’s in the 1970’s, whose […]

A Delicious Mix of New Knowledge and Old Belief

Alif the Unseen by G. Willow Wilson

September 17, 2019 by Lisa Bee Leave a Comment

CBR11 Bingo Square: Travel Now perhaps the characters in this story don’t journey far beyond their city (though they do end up in the outskirts) and largely travel within it in a physical sense, but this novel also includes a journey to an unseen world of djinn, and therefore I picked it for the Travel square for CBR bingo. Alif the Unseen centers around a young hacker who goes by the pseudonym Alif, in an unnamed city along the Persian Gulf. This city is a […]
