Reading has slowed down a bit lately, but I won't let that stop me!

Coming to Realize that I Really Do Love Sports Stories

Fence, volume 1 by C.S. Pacat and Johanna the Mad

Fence, volume 2 by C.S. Pacat and Johanna the Mad

May 12, 2019 by Lisa Bee 5 Comments

As per narfna’s suggestion in a glowing review of the first volume of Fence, I waited until there was at least a second volume out: and it still seemed to go by far too quickly! At least the next one is scheduled to be released in August which isn’t too far away, I guess… In any case, this comic series is a super cute and fun one, about a sport I haven’t seen featured much in sports movies/books, etc. There are definitely some familiar features […]

Conversations with Ourselves Through Conversations with Art

The Museum of Modern Love by Heather Rose

May 7, 2019 by Lisa Bee Leave a Comment

To be honest this was another one of those books that I picked up at the library because the cover was appealing to me. Upon then seeing the logline that it was inspired by the art of Marina Abramovic, I felt compelled to check it out: you see, I did a big project about her back in art school (as a part of our history of performance art unit), and at the time didn’t really get what it was about her work that drew so […]

They’ve Even Got a Not-Quite-Talking-But-Very-Expressive Dog!

Meddling Kids by Edgar Cantero

April 25, 2019 by Lisa Bee Leave a Comment

Like a mashup of the teen detective gang in Scooby Doo with the return-to-what-still-haunts-you-in-your-home-town vibes of It, Meddling Kids brings us a club of teenagers who would solve mysteries in their town over the summer; 13 years later, however, and their once-bright futures are all anything but, as the remaining members of the club all still affected by the last case they did together in some way or another. Their final case seemed straightforward enough, finding a man in a mask imitating an old legend […]

Easy Breezy Steampunk Mystery-Romance

Timekeeper by Tara Sim

April 22, 2019 by Lisa Bee Leave a Comment

Timekeeper is a YA novel set in England in the late 1800s, with some historical (mostly, inventions, etc) aspects played with by the author for her version of this world: it has a very steampunk feel to it, and this is only added to by the fact that clocks play a huge role in the story. The clock-towers effectively control and guide the towns around them, and our young protagonist, Danny, is a mechanic of these clocks who can feel the threads of time acutely. […]

A Love Letter to the Women Forgotten After Deemed No Longer Useful, Tucked Inside a Love-Hate Letter to a Hometown

The Melting Queen by Bruce Cinnamon

April 4, 2019 by Lisa Bee Leave a Comment

Honestly, I’m probably a little biased with this one, and writing a review feels a little strange because not only was it written by an old pal of mine from high school but it is also quite a love-hate letter to the city I live (albeit a somewhat fictional one), Edmonton, which doesn’t always get much of a feature in a lot of the things I read or watch (though one of my previous reads this year, Birdie, did include the city as a part […]

Almost is Never Enough

The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton

March 26, 2019 by Lisa Bee Leave a Comment

This book had all the ingredients to be very interesting, and it almost got there: almost. Unfortunately, after sludging through a pretty slow first-half which didn’t engage me very much, it drew me back in with some interesting twists, only to then fizzle out again. The whole thing just left me feeling cold, a large part of which I think had to do with how impenetrable I found the protagonist, Nella: I felt like she was being kept at an arms length and just couldn’t […]
