“I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don’t notice it.”

The Color Purple by Alice Walker

September 26, 2020 by Leedock 1 Comment

CBR12 BINGO: Violet Square So very late to this party and I’m more than a little disappointed in myself that it took a CBR Bingo Square to get me to read it. It was not at all what I expected. Told through a series of letters written between sisters and from one sister to God, The Color Purple is about a lot of things: racism, classism, abuse, love, family. At it’s heart though, is a beautiful story about a woman, who against all odds and […]

“John laughs at me, of course, but one expects that in a marriage.”

The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman

September 26, 2020 by Leedock 1 Comment

CBR12 BINGO: Yellow Square I’m finding the random color square bingo row pretty delightful. Since I don’t have many titles on my TBR pile that fit the bill, I started Googling around to find titles that fit the colors. The yellow search yielded an interesting little bit of feminist short fiction published in 1891. Perkins Gilman puts a fictional spin on her experiences with the “bed rest cure” that doctors of the time prescribed for women suffering from “nervous” conditions. In her introduction, she notes […]

Stay Sexy and Don't Get Murdered: The Definitive How To Guide by Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark

August 22, 2020 by Leedock 3 Comments

CBR12 BINGO: Debut This whole hermit lifestyle I have been living for the last five months has yielded a handful of healthy side effects. In an unprecedented turn of events, I have turned to walking as a quarantine-induced anxiety and stress reliever. My sister gave me her old FitBit and my non-athletic competitive spirit kicked in. I WILL get in at least 13,000-15,000 steps EVERY DAMN DAY. Those circles WILL BE closed. If I’m not feeling like slapping on a mask and braving the city sidewalks […]

How to wrestle some success from a dress, a snake and a song.

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins

August 22, 2020 by Leedock Leave a Comment

CBR12 BINGO: Green Square A book about the making of a narcissistic, ruthless and calculating leader is either the most perfect book to be reading right now or the worst. I really can’t decide. In Collins’ prequel to her Hunger Games series, the games are pretty primal. The district tributes aren’t all dolled up, given a backstory, housed in elaborate apartments or fed extravagant buffets. They are kept in a cage at the zoo until they are dumped into a war torn arena to duke it out. […]

I am not going to take you on top of a moldy sarcophagus.

A Murderous Relation by Deanna Raybourn

August 22, 2020 by Leedock 5 Comments

CBR12 BINGO: Red I am already worried about the day when Raybourn stops writing these Veronica Speedwell mysteries. Truly. These books and Sherry Thomas’ Lady Sherlock series are what fill the little hole in my heart that Gail Carriger left when the Parasols and Protectorate series ended. I need my witty banter laced with sexual tension. I yearn for characters with quirky occupations, impeccable fashion sense and taste for tea and sweets. Give me passages like this and I am satisified: “Veronica,” he said flatly, ” I am not going […]

…the carefree scoundrel and the sensitive spinster…

The Lady Travelers Guide to Scoundrels and Other Gentlemen by Victoria Alexander

May 30, 2020 by Leedock Leave a Comment

My not so bad habit of judging a book by it’s cover had me snatching this book up at the local drugstore where it has languished in my TBR pile for a few years. I was always going to get to it, but the library prevailed. With no library access and after finishing the last three books that I had checked out, I finally cracked it open. Turns out, it was just the right amount of intrigue, witty banter and smoldering looks to keep me […]
