An Unexpected Peril by Deanna Raybourn

June 9, 2021 by Leedock Leave a Comment

Dear Ms Raybourn: You may never stop writing your Veronica Speedwell novels. I will not permit it. Many thanks. Book 6 in the Veronica Speedwell Mystery series, is, as they all are, a damn delight. If you haven’t read them, please do. If you do read them, know that this one does not disappoint. Everyone’s favorite lepidopterist and taxidermist are on a momentary mystery solving and near death experiencing lull. As they work side by side to create an exhibit honoring the late mountain climber Alice Baker-Greene […]

Bridges exist to bring people closer together…

Anxious People by Fredrik Backman

March 24, 2021 by Leedock 3 Comments

This was just the sort of thing I should have picked up at the beginning of the pandemic when I was having trouble settling my mind enough to read. On the surface, a book about a handful of people being held hostage in an apartment in Sweden by an incompetent bank robber seems like the wrong book to read now. It’s like the nightmare that I occasionally have: finding myself unmasked and trapped in close proximity to unmasked strangers whose risky behaviors during the pandemic […]

I believe it involved pie.

The Bridgertons: Happily Ever After by Julia Quinn

March 7, 2021 by Leedock Leave a Comment

Just when you thought I was finished here. Prepare the fainting couch, because there is more. MORE. Turns out (a surprise to no one who has already read these books, I imagine) that fans had been anxious about the future fates of the beloved Bridgerton clan after finishing the books so Quinn decided to “answer” their pleas with a series of 2nd epilogues. The epilogues published with each book were mere tidbits and demanding readers were not satisfied! I believe that these 2nd epilogues were […]

I am hoping that you have misjudged yourself.

On the Way to the Wedding by Julia Quinn

March 7, 2021 by Leedock Leave a Comment

The last full length book in the Bridgerton series at last! Since the love birds here both have a fondness for breakfast, I will proceed with a comestible more appropriate to this novel. If book 8 in the Bridgerton series were a breakfast situation, it would be a scramble of 90’s Rom Coms with a side of Austen hash browns. Young George has come a long way from tossing peas across the dinner table and hiding frogs in his sisters’ beds. As the last of the Bridgerton brood to […]

I’m not certain you’d know the right sort of man for you if he arrived on your doorstep riding an elephant.

It's In His Kiss by Julia Quinn

February 21, 2021 by Leedock 1 Comment

This book is trickier to conjure an analogous baked good for, but, of course, I’m gonna try. I do think this is more pie than cake, so…if book 7 in the Bridgerton series were a pie, it would be a Little Women filling with a Nancy Drew crust. Odd, yes, but so is our heroine here. The youngest Bridgerton child and last remaining single daughter, Hyacinth, poses a bit of a challenge to marry off for the exhausted Lady Violet. (Poor thing is sooooo close! Six down, two to go, Vi!) […]

Why don’t you just marry her?

When He Was Wicked by Julia Quinn

February 16, 2021 by Leedock 2 Comments

If book six in the Bridgerton series were a cake (I did warn everyone in the last review), it would be multiple layers of Outlander enveloped in a Fifty Shades of Grey ganache. This is definitely the raciest of the books so far. Widows aren’t afraid of a little wickedness, I guess. Francesca, the third daughter of the Bridgerton clan, was married, and promptly widowed to a Scottish earl at some point backstage. It’s mentioned in other books, mostly to explain Francesca’s absence at certain family activities or crises: “Oh, she […]
