Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo

December 19, 2021 by Leedock Leave a Comment

Coming off the high of reading the first couple of A Crown of Thorn and Roses books, I enjoyed the first book in this trilogy but was a little less enthusiastic about it. Compared to the ACOTAR books, well, I just wasn’t feeling the same pull. They share a lot of the same things: heroines who struggle with their “powers,” love triangles, fantastical worlds, but Shadow and Bone didn’t quite suck me into the story as much. I think part of it was having a hard time with the […]

A Court of Frost and Starlight by Sarah J. Maas

December 19, 2021 by Leedock Leave a Comment

I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the next book in this series. Expecting a hefty tome like the preceding books, I was kind of disappointed when I picked up this thin little volume from the library. I was ready to tuck in for the long haul, but this 4th book is more like a novella. However, it does take place during Solstice celebrations so slightly festive and somewhat appropriate timing for me to be reading it now. Again, this is book 4 so […]

You’re never going to believe who ended up being my hero.

Because of Miss Bridgerton by Julia Quinn

December 19, 2021 by Leedock Leave a Comment

When I sat down to compile my best of/worst of list for 2021, Quinn’s books fell on both. I guess you will have to wait until the lists are published in a couple of weeks, but I will say that I credit the Bridgerton series with getting me out of my pandemic reading slump. They were just the page turners to yank me out of my anxiety jumbled brain. Once I dispensed with the “main” books in the series, I had to hunt down all […]

New Castle's Kadunce Murders: Mystery and the Devil in Northwest Pennsylvania by Dale Richard Perelman

October 23, 2021 by Leedock Leave a Comment

CBRBINGO13: Home Square (BINGO! The Wilds square to Book Club square) I think this close to Halloween, it’s fitting that I picked a book about a murder in my hometown that haunted my middle school dreams. New Castle is a small rust belt town about an hour and 1/2 northwest of Pittsburgh. By the time I was growing up in the 70’s and 80’s, most of the city was already in decline as local industry and jobs dried up. It wasn’t a bad place to […]

But how we are remembered is less important than what we do now.

Lore by Alexandra Bracken

CBR13 BINGO: Mythic Square BINGO! (Book Club Square to Free Square diagonal) I was looking for something to tick the “Mythic” square off my CBR Bingo card and wanted something that was heavy on the re-telling and light on requiring PhD level knowledge of Greek mythology in order to “get it.” This fit the bill but I think if I had a better memory for the mythology class I took 100 years ago in college it would have been helpful. This a YA mythic send […]

No, I think you’re highly intelligent. It’s not lucky for you, in a lot of ways. If you were a little bit stupider you might have an easier life.

Beautiful World, Where are You by Sally Rooney

CBR13 BINGO: Reader’s Choice (in the New Series Square) BINGO! Book Club Square to Machinery Square I don’t think that I have ever had this much of a love/hate reaction to a book. Truly. Everything that I loved about Rooney’s Normal People is here. All of the awkwardness and raw emotion. Everything that I really didn’t like about Conversations with Friends is here too. All of the self indulgent naval gazing histrionics. Ugh. The plot is not complex even if the characters think that they are. The entire story revolves around four […]
