No Human Being is Illegal

Illegal by Eoin Colfer

July 16, 2019 by LanierHgts 2 Comments

“You, who are so-called illegal aliens, must know that no human being is illegal.  That is a contradiction in terms.  Human beings can be beautiful or more beautiful, they can be fat or skinny, they can be right or wrong, but illegal?  How can a human being be illegal?”  Elie Wiesel, Nobel Laureate and Holocaust survivor So starts this graphic novel geared toward tween/teen readers (I would suggest ages 10 and over).  As a lawyer formerly working in immigration defense, and in light of the […]

More P&P Fan Fiction Worth Reading

Longbourne by Jo Baker

July 15, 2019 by LanierHgts 1 Comment

Another Pride and Prejudice bit of fan fiction, this time from the perspective of the servants.  As a huge Jane Austen fan, I cannot express how much I loved this book.  It cleverly re-imagines what is happening “downstairs” both in response to what is happening “upstairs,” as well as an imagining of what is happening in the servants own lives. Cleverly, each chapter starts with a quote from Pride and Prejudice so that the reader knows what is happening upstairs with the Bennett family.  The […]

Anne Perry Writes the Next Generation

Twenty-One Days by Anne Perry

July 15, 2019 by LanierHgts Leave a Comment

For my #cbr11bingo #summerread selection I have read Twenty-One Days, by one of my favorite crime novelists, Anne Perry. For years I have been reading (and awaiting the next release of) the Thomas and Charlotte Pitt series, set in Victorian England. In those books, Charlotte is an out-spoken woman born into Society, who marries for love well beneath her station. Thomas Pitt starts off as a police detective, but as the novels continue, moves up in job title and status (no spoilers as to where […]

The Real Enemy is the Dirt

My Russian Grandmother and Her American Vacuum Cleaner: a family memoir by Meir Shalev

February 9, 2019 by LanierHgts Leave a Comment

This book is fundamentally the story of  immigration and coming of age during the pioneer period of the 20s and 30s, and in young State of Israel.  It is lighthearted and laugh out loud funny .  I immediately felt like a part of the family. Having lived in Israel, the constant battle with keeping dirt out of the house brought back memories and made me laugh. Shalev takes you though the history of the early Jewish pioneers to Israel in a unique way – through […]

Patience for the English Patient

The English Patient by Michael Ondaatje

February 9, 2019 by LanierHgts 4 Comments

This is definitely not an easy read.  It is slow, and methodical, much like each of the characters. Their stories are revealed through a series of flashbacks, as well as in their current situation.  For me it revealed itself as a mystery, for in the end nothing was as it seemed in the beginning. It is the story of four troubled people who all find themselves, through different circumstances, living together in a bombed out Italian villa at the end of WWII.  They are all […]

Prejudice Against Pride

Pride by Ibi Zoboi

January 1, 2019 by LanierHgts 1 Comment

I wanted to love this book.  I am a huge Jane Austen fan and am always happy to read fan lit.  So I was very excited about the prospect of this book, especially with all of the great reviews that I read.  But I hated it. I think the thing that bugged me the most was the author’s treatment of Elizabeth (Zuri) and Darcy (Darius).  Nothing about these characters reflected their original counterparts.  Elizabeth Bennet is prideful, but she is also polite and kind.  From […]
