Lane's Reviews:

Rodents of Unusual Size

March 12, 2017 by Lane Leave a Comment

This is the second book in the Charm of Magpies series and a tiny bit of a let down. The plot is just as tightly wound and well paced. The characters are still funny and sexy. I think my discontent comes from the lack of POV switch, we do not get anything from Stephen Day’s point of view. I am not sure why the author made that choice because it is actually Stephen that has the most at stake in this one and I would […]

“Neither Skewton nor the Thwaites offer the charm of your company, and I’m saying that to a man who spent the night disembowelling cats

First a quick housekeeping note, the publisher of this book went under and the author is working on getting the rights back so she can republish them. Amazon has a few copies left though. I took the gamble of buying the series because I was afraid they would run out and I am glad I did because the first book was fantastic! I read a review for this book here, so thank you cannonball community for another great recommendation. This is a m/m romance and […]

Don’t trust generous relatives living in creepy houses

March 8, 2017 by Lane Leave a Comment

Kate is broke and too young and pretty to work (that was thing). She is an orphan with no siblings and only her old nurse Sarah to turn to. Kate starts to think her only hope is to become a dresser or a seamstress. Sarah decides to write to Kate’s aunt (her father’s estranged half-sister Kate has never met). The aunt instantly appears and declares Kate the daughter she never had. Kate’s problems are over, right? She is whisked away to an old mansion and […]

These Dead Run

February 22, 2017 by Lane 1 Comment

I did not like this book at first, and I almost gave up on it. This is by the same author that wrote Truthwitch, which I did not like as much as other people seemed to. I kept at this book, mostly because I was sitting by the pool and had not brought another book. Around page 50 things picked up and I ended up staying up way too late that night finishing it. Eleanor Fitt’s brother is missing and the Dead are walking. Apparently […]

If Georgette Heyer wrote fantasy

February 17, 2017 by Lane 2 Comments

A fantastic blending of genres, The Dark Days Club takes a classic Regency set-up, romantic tension, and adds a terrifying fantasy layer, creating something that feels organic and real and wonderful. The Regency world of this novel is perfect, featuring the real life people that so often showed up in Georgette Heyer’s novels (Lady Jersey, the prince regent, Beau) and all of the dances and morning calls and promenades, making this fantasy novel feel grounded even when the supernatural elements are introduced. It started out […]

Sweet Steam

February 13, 2017 by Lane 1 Comment

Imogene Hale is different. She does not like men. She does not want children. She is brilliant but uneducated. She seeks to broaden her world and hopefully meet some fellow “perverts” by becoming a maid at the vampire nest. There she meets an enigmatic and very sexy inventor. A sweet story about love and coming out in a vampire riddled Victorian England. Romancing The Inventor takes place in the great Parasol Protectorate and Soulless universe but it is a stand alone novella. This was my […]
