Rare Disappointment in Discworld

February 29, 2016 by lainiefig Leave a Comment

I can’t NOT love a Discworld novel by Terry Pratchett, but I may have loved this one a little  (OK, maybe a lot) less than I usually love a gallop through Discworld, maybe because it was more of a trot than a gallop?  This book was less lively, less chock full of barbed hilarity, less truly representative of my favorite characters, less magical–all perhaps because it was written after the great Mr. P. had Alzheimers–I’ve even seen some say it can’t have been written by him […]

Slow Medicine

February 13, 2016 by lainiefig Leave a Comment

One of my dearest friends sent me this book for Christmas.  I’m glad she did because I had never heard of it, and it’s not something I necessarily would have picked up in the store myself, but it was a fascinating read. God’s Hotel is the story of one doctor’s journey and experience with the last American almshouse in San Francisco called Laguna Honda Hospital.  It’s also the story of some of her patients and the changing over from practicing “slow” medicine to providing “efficient health […]

Ho Hum. So Much Nostalgia, So Much Meh.

January 17, 2016 by lainiefig 2 Comments

Do I love The Last Starfighter?  Do I need a new novel version of it?  Meh. Do I love 80’s games and remember them fondly?  Hell yeah, but even I got a bit tired of the references and repetitiveness in this book. This may be unrelated but these were my personal favorites: I listened to the audiobook of Armada because I so enjoyed the previous audiobook by Ernest Cline, Ready Player One, also read by Wil Wheaton.  This novel also threw in a lot of nostalgia for […]

Love and Monsters in a New Age

January 6, 2016 by lainiefig 6 Comments

Wow, what a book to start the year.  The novel starts sort of mysteriously and I don’t want to spoil the mystery (though it’s been out a while now so you may know the mystery anyway–I think I knew before I bought the book, but I didn’t read it right away so I had forgotten by the time I picked it up again).  I will say it’s a post-apocalyptic novel–you get that within the first three pages, so that’s not a spoiler.  Also there are monsters and […]
