kniki's Reviews:

Just a lovely, insightful, nostalgic, and kind of sad read.

The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker

December 20, 2021 by kniki 1 Comment

When Earth slows its spinning, haphazardly adding extra minutes to the day , Julia and her family (along with the rest of the world) don’t really notice. Not straight away. But in the weeks and months that follow, Julia’s world will kind of turn upside down. This is partially due to the strangeness of the situation, and also because Julia will soon become a teenager – a turbulent period at the best of times. Decisions need to be made that will allow for some predictability […]

What is work really and why are we still doing so much of it?

Work: A History of How We Spend Our Time by James Suzman

November 24, 2021 by kniki Leave a Comment

Isn’t it weird that some people pay heaps of money to do ‘leisure’ activities that other people ‘have to do’ as their work? Sewing, fishing, hunting, cooking classes, etc, can be classed completely differently depending on whether or not you’re relying on them to provide you the necessities of life. Is eating work? How about getting sunlight onto our skin? We need these to survive so they probably are work; but this is a totally different way of looking at it. Other concepts turned on […]

A repurposed life by Ronni Kahn with Jessica Chapnik Kahn

October 11, 2021 by kniki Leave a Comment

Ronni Kahn didn’t set out to be the founder of one of Australia’s most recognisable charities – she just wanted to solve a problem. Surplus food from events put on by her business was wasteful; and many people in Sydney were going hungry. So one night at the end of a party, unable to dump yet another uneaten platter, she loaded up her car and delivered trays of gourmet food to a place helping people in need. This memoir was a great read – interesting […]

Sometimes you read a book and just want to go hang out with the author for a while.

Recipe for a kinder life by Annie Smithers

October 6, 2021 by kniki 1 Comment

This was a fairly quick read for me and left me wanting to read more by Annie Smithers, visit her restaurant, do a cooking class with her… and stay a little while on her farm. Part memoir, part recipe book, part instructional on building a hectic but satisfying life, Recipe for a kinder life has become one of my favourite books this year. As the author describes her life as a chef, her move to the country and subsequent purchasing of property and running of […]

I am really happy I stuck with this trilogy.

The City of Mirrors by Justin Cronin

October 2, 2021 by kniki Leave a Comment

While my reviews of Cronin’s first two books in this trilogy, The Passage and The Twelve, were not the most favourable (more because of my personal taste than anything else), I am really happy I persisted through to the end of this 1000-year-spanning epic series. To recap, it follows the spread of a virus that jumps from animals to humans with such rapidity that Earth’s population is very nearly wiped out completely. Two ‘viral’ leaders emerge – Amy and Zero – in what ends up […]

Three little words.

Boy Swallows Universe by Trent Dalton

September 20, 2021 by kniki 3 Comments

I’ve just finished reading Boy Swallows Universe and my heart is still racing. From the beginning that is an ending to the ending that is a beginning, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Admittedly I did just tear through it in four days in preparation to see the stage adaptation this week but honestly that impetus  wasn’t needed – I genuinely wanted to read it in every spare minute I had. Eli Bell is a teenager growing up through the 80s and 90s in suburban Brisbane. […]
