Twas the night before Hogswatch

Hogfather by Terry Pratchett

January 10, 2019 by kittenkong42 2 Comments

It’s the night before Hogswatch and the Hogfather is missing. Without him delivering presents the little children will lose their belief and without it the sun will not come up. This calls for the intervention of one man – Death (well… one anthropomorphic personification anyway) – to masquerade as the Hogfather and help restore faith that the light will return. Yes, it’s a Discworld novel, buried midway through the series and featuring everybody’s favourite Grim Reaper. We’re also reunited with his grand-daughter Susan (currently acting […]

The Belgariad: Not all tropes are bad

December 20, 2018 by kittenkong42 6 Comments

The Belgariad is a series of five books written by David Eddings starting with Pawn of Prophecy in 1982. I discovered the first in the summer of 1985 as an 12 year old on my last day of vacation and by the time I was home the next day I’d already finished it. This included reading in a car and feeling sick as a result but I couldn’t bring myself to put the book down. Luckily the whole series was out by then so I […]

Discovering the Little Prince

November 13, 2018 by kittenkong42 Leave a Comment

Having never read this as a child I came across this book on Amazon and decided it was time I acquainted myself with The Little Prince. I am now very glad that I met him. This is a book that I think can be read by anyone of any age, and people will take different things away based upon their age and experience of life. It can be read as a simple story of an explorer who meets a young boy in the desert and […]

Sunshine in book form

October 18, 2018 by kittenkong42 1 Comment

Lin-Manuel Miranda is human sunshine, this is just a basic fact of life. And if you follow him on twitter (as you should do) then you’ll be aware of his tradition of greeting everyone with a morning tweet and wishing them farewell at night. Over time this simple little greetings grew and grew to become a part of the day that made people feel better about themselves and the world, helped you cope on a bad day, or just made things seem a little brighter. […]

The future can feel like the past (visiting an old SF novel)

October 16, 2018 by kittenkong42 3 Comments

I saw this book on Kindle and having first read it when I was a teenager I decided to revisit and see what I thought of it now. The picture here is actually the cover it had when I was an impressionable teenager in the 1980s! Even when I read it this was an old book – having first been published in 1963 – and it is aimed at the young adult market with a teenage protagonist. The novel is a baby space opera, set […]

Bringing a community back together

September 28, 2018 by kittenkong42 1 Comment

On the 14th of June 2017 Grenfell Tower burned and a community lost 72 people and their home. The recovery process is still ongoing and the building is a scar and a reminder of how cutting costs and ignoring residents can come with a very high price. But Grenfell is a community and they have pulled together in the aftermath of these events to rebuild their lives. And one of the ways they have come together as a community is through cooking – the Al-Manaar […]
