I love to read. I'm usually reading at least 3 books at a time. They're not all good... some are really bad. I have trouble not finishing books though. Now CBR has doubled down on that trouble, because I want to get credit for reading the bad ones too!

Two more Enola Holmes books!

Enola Holmes and the Black Barouche (Enola Holmes #7) by Nancy Springer

Enola Holmes and the Elegant Escapade (Enola Holmes #8) by Nancy Springer

June 13, 2023 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

I just love Enola so much. She just fully refuses to be a proper lady like she’s “supposed” to be. At this point her pain in the butt brothers have realized that she can’t be tamed or sent to a boarding school, or whatever they want to do to make her a proper lady. They thankfully just let her be her awesome self. We start this story with her brother Sherlock being mopey and most likely in the throes of a depressive episode. Miss Letitia […]

A teen goes missing… years later the truth comes out

Open House: A Novel by Katie Sise

June 13, 2023 by kfishgirl 1 Comment

Ooh I liked this one. It’s a common theme in the thriller or suspense genre. Something happens to a teen. Years or decades pass. Something brings the people surrounding the event back together. The truth comes out slowly. More people die! I’m not saying that’s a bad thing. I love it. I’ve read a bunch of books with that similar theme, but I’ve liked them all. Our main character is Haley, and the missing/murdered teen was her sister Emma. Haley leaves for a while to […]

A short essay I heard about on NPR and needed to know more

On Grief: Love, Loss, Memory by Jennifer Senior

June 13, 2023 by kfishgirl 1 Comment

I heard Jennifer Senior talking to one of the NPR hosts one day about this short story. It drew me in, and I wanted to read the whole thing. This was a short essay, but the characters (who are real people) were very well described and I felt like I was interacting with them. The main story is about Bobby McIlvaine, who worked in one of the twin towers and died in the September 11th attacks. Bobby had written journals starting in his childhood, up […]

Some more Bosch!!

The Dark Hours (Harry Bosch #23, Renee Ballard #4) by Michael Connelly

Desert Star (Harry Bosch #24, Renee Ballard #5) by Michael Connelly

May 1, 2023 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

I got so excited when I saw this book was available at my library. I immediately borrowed it and started listening. And within the first few minutes I realized that I had totally already read it! I thought initially that it was the new Bosch / Ballard book I had been waiting for. A few minutes after realizing I had already read it though, I decided that I had liked it the first time around, and enough time had passed between readings that I’d just […]

A good Swedish Thriller

Hidden in Snow (Åremorden #1) by Viveca Sten

April 27, 2023 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

Have you ever watched a Swedish crime series? It’s a bit of a different experience. Everyone is kind of cold. And I don’t mean that as a pun. Yes the weather is cold, but the people are a little bit frosty too. I felt a bit of this reading the first book in the Aremorden series. Along with frosty, they were kinda tough. They left the house when there were feet of snow on the ground. It made me think of people living in Buffalo. […]

A totally different book than I normally read

The Direction of the Wind by Mansi Shah

April 27, 2023 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

I don’t remember how I found this book, but it’s totally not my style. Nobody gets murdered. I was going to say there aren’t even any missing persons or mysteries to solve, but that’s totally not true. I guess it had the undertones of “my style” of book and I didn’t even realize it. We start out with Sophie mourning the loss of her father, who just recently passed away. She’s helping her aunts clean out the house, and she finds some old letters hidden […]
