So we all know about Helen of Troy from Greek mythology. But this is Helen of Sparta? We start out learning about Helen and her assholish family. Her mother hates her, because Zeus is her father, and he basically raped her mother. This doesn’t bode well for Helen, because her mother doesn’t really want her to be happy, and neither does her jealous sister. Helen has visions about the future, and she keeps seeing her city burned and conquered. She tries desperately throughout the book […]
I guess this clears things up?
After loving Annihilation (Book 1 in the Southern Reach trilogy), and not really loving, but not hating Authority (Book 2), I was excited for Acceptance, which is book 3, and the final book in the trilogy. Acceptance starts pretty much right after Authority. Control and Ghost Bird (the new name for the biologist) are back in Area X, and further explore its mysteries. The stories of the psychologist (from Annihilation), Ghost Bird, Control, and the former lighthouse keeper are told during different time points throughout […]
These two books are totally unrelated, but for time they’re going into the same post!
I liked this book. It shifts between 1977 and today. In 1977, a young girl is trying to work at a bank that her aunt (her only family) used to work at. She’s only 16, but she lies to get in. She befriends a troublemaker, and together they try to figure out what shady dealings are going on at the bank. Today, another young girl is working at an architecture firm out of college. She’s in charge of drawing up the schematics of the now […]
The guys behind figuring out Area X
As soon as I finished Annihilation, I got Authority from the library. While I was there, I grabbed the final book in the trilogy too, so I wouldn’t have to wait to finish them all. I was sad to discover that the first book was my favorite though. This second book in the trilogy was my second favorite though. It centers on a man named “Control”, who is the new director of the agency that studies Area X. We don’t get much backstory initially about […]
The creepy world of Area X
This book was my first taste of Jeff Vandermeer’s work. I loved it. It’s the first book in the Southern Reach trilogy. It’s by far my favorite of the three. The other two were a little crazy for me, and that’s saying something! This book just pulled me in and made me want to know the whole story. Annihilation centers around Area X, which is a place separated from the rest of the world after an incident a few years ago. Every year (we’re told), […]
It’s scary how easy it is to ruin someone’s life
A high school girl goes missing, and the whole town is looking for her. A social worker named Dan, who works with troubled teens is “Caught” on a television show that exposes internet predators. It’s just like “To Catch a Predator”, but somehow a little less respected. The host of the show immediately becomes a main character as well. There are a lot of twists and turns that will keep you guessing throughout the whole book. You’ll go back and forth so many times wondering […]
