I love to read. I'm usually reading at least 3 books at a time. They're not all good... some are really bad. I have trouble not finishing books though. Now CBR has doubled down on that trouble, because I want to get credit for reading the bad ones too!

Don’t read this onboard an airplane!

Falling by T.J. Newman

The premise of this book is that a pilot leaves his house in the morning to fly an extra flight and his family is abducted / kidnapped / held hostage unless he crashes the plane. Throughout the book we get to know the pilot, his family, the crew, and the terrorists better. I don’t want to call it a slow burn, because it’s an active hostage situation, but the book does take its time getting through everything. The captain’s family starts out as captives in […]

I accidentally started an alien smut series, and now I can’t stop!

(Icehome #1) Lauren’s Barbarian by Ruby Dixon

(Icehome #2) Veronica’s Dragon by Ruby Dixon

(Icehome #3) Willa’s Beast by Ruby Dixon

(Icehome #3.5) Gail's Family by Ruby Dixon

(Icehome #5) Hannah's Hero by Ruby Dixon

(Icehome #6) Devi's Distraction by Ruby Dixon

So I know there’s nothing wrong with reading smut (that’s what I’m calling this entire series), but it’s not usually my jam. I started listening to the first book because it had my name in the title. I was excited. Then I got into it and was like “oh boy, I’m reading alien porn”. I didn’t stop though. It’s actually alien porn with a touch of interpersonal drama, peril, natural disasters, and lots of focus on consent. These books are mostly fun. You can’t listen […]

A parent’s worst nightmare

The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena

April 11, 2024 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

This was my first “sitting and waiting for my allergy shot” book of the year. I go every Thursday (ish) at lunch time, and I have to get my allergy shot and sit there for 30 minutes to make sure I don’t have a bad reaction. I started last year and would usually play on my phone while I waited, but this year I decided to use my time wisely and read an actual physical book. So needless to say it took a while to […]

T. Kingfisher catch up!

The Twisted Ones by T. Kingfisher

(Sworn Soldier #2) What Feasts at Night by T. Kingfisher

A woman nicknamed Mouse has to clear out her grandma’s house after her dad asks. She’s just about to start a new job when something happens and she can’t, so she’s widely available to help. Grandma wasn’t a very nice lady, so she doesn’t even have fond memories to look back on. Oh, and she was a baaad hoarder. Sidebar story here – my Gram lived in a nursing home until she passed away two years ago. She was ninety four, and less than two […]

I love Becky Chambers!

(Monk and Robot #1) A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers

(Monk and Robot #2) A Prayer for the Crown-Shy by Becky Chambers

(Wayfarers #1) The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers

April 9, 2024 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

The theme of these three books is loosely that they were written by Becky Chambers, who as I stated above I love! I read “To Be Taught if Fortunate” at least twice, and I’d totally read it again. The other theme of these three books though, is different (for me) pronouns. I find it hard to believe (but I think it’s true) that these are the first books I’ve read with either trans or non-binary characters. I’m socially liberal and I believe in rights for […]

Poetry continues to be beautiful, but sadly not for me

The sun and her flowers by Rupi Kaur

April 9, 2024 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

This was a kindle selection, and I can’t really remember how I got to it. I think I was trying to fulfill a certain category for the seasonal kindle challenges, but I don’t even remember what the category was! I’ve never been a big fan of poetry, because I always get caught up in whether it rhymes or not, and whether it should rhyme or not. I also feel a little dumb when I read poetry, because I find that more often than not, I […]
