I love to read. I'm usually reading at least 3 books at a time. They're not all good... some are really bad. I have trouble not finishing books though. Now CBR has doubled down on that trouble, because I want to get credit for reading the bad ones too!

The second Dune book isn’t as good as the first

Dune Messiah (Dune #2) by Frank Herbert

September 5, 2022 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

Ok maybe that title is a little provocative. After I loved Dune so much, I was excited about the second Dune book. I’m not sure if I’m just not smart enough, or what, but I did not enjoy this nearly as much as the first Dune. I think we all fell in love with Paul Atreides / Muad’Dib in Dune as he’s built up throughout the book. Then in Messiah Mr. Herbert wanted to make us all dislike him? Paul has been Emperor for about […]

An Agatha Christie intro

The Mysterious Affair at Styles (Hercule Poirot #1) by Agatha Christie

September 5, 2022 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

I’ve definitely read at least one or two of Agatha Christie’s books before. I’ve also seen a few movies of her books. The Mysterious Affair at Styles is the first Hercule Poirot novel.  I thought it was interesting to “meet” Poirot in his first novel after already seeing him portrayed in a few movies. I pictured Kenneth Branagh, but I guess a younger version while reading this book.  We start with a murder mystery at Styles, which some rich lady’s house. We meet her and […]

Recommended by my BFF who knows I need a lot of action in my romancey novels

A Court of Thorns and Roses (A Court of Thorns and Roses #1) by Sarah J. Maas

September 5, 2022 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

This is apparently a hot new series. I had no idea when my friend recommended it to me. I tried to borrow this first book from the library and found a whole bunch of people waiting in front of me. I was excited when I finally got it though! It actually took me a while to get into it though. We meet the main character Feyre hunting in the woods. That part I was OK with. She seemed to hunt with honor and needed the […]

Ooh boy. I wanted to love this so much, but it made me very angry.

When Women Were Dragons by Kelley Barnhill

July 28, 2022 by kfishgirl 7 Comments

I think this is my first ever Cannonball book that I DID NOT FINISH.  I saw this book somewhere (I legit have no idea where), and it caught my eye because the main character is named Alex Green, and also duh – dragons.  My cousin who lives in Arizona who just left Pennsylvania after visiting our entire family is named Alex Green.  I was pumped when I read the plot too. Whoo boy.  I borrowed this audiobook from the library, and I was so excited […]

Women are blacking out and they don’t know why

Blackout by Erin Flanagan

July 28, 2022 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

Holy crap this started out rough.  I almost quit it a bunch of times.  It’s one of those books where it feels like the main character creates a lot of her own problems. Maris is a psychologist, mom, and wife.  She had a drinking problem for many years.  She quit cold turkey after a scary incident where she almost drunk drove with her kid.  Since then (in her words) she’s been “white knuckling” her sobriety.  She doesn’t ask for help, and she doesn’t let people […]

A new UK crime series

Beware the Past (DCI Matt Ballard #1) by Joy Ellis

July 28, 2022 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

Somehow I got myself into another series!  This happens to me a lot.  I feel like it might’ve been a Kindle First though?  I’m not sure.  It could’ve also been a “you’ve read Joy Ellis books before, so you might like this one” too.  Who knows?  I have so many books on my TBR list, so it’s hard to remember where they all came from! Anyway, it’s right up my alley.  It’s a British detective (or whatever they’re called – DCI, DI… I can’t keep […]
