I love to read. I'm usually reading at least 3 books at a time. They're not all good... some are really bad. I have trouble not finishing books though. Now CBR has doubled down on that trouble, because I want to get credit for reading the bad ones too!

Misleading tagline, but not a bad book

Something in the Water by Catherine Steadman

April 27, 2023 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

This is the first physical book I’ve read since at least the summer. I read the most on my kindle in my bed, or listening to an audiobook in the car or going for a walk. My boss lent me a few paperback books, and I read this one in about two days.   The tagline is “Have you ever wondered how long it takes to dig a grave?”, but that’s almost the least exciting part of this book. The main characters are Erin and […]

And I’m back with Colleen again

Verity by Colleen Hoover

April 27, 2023 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

OK so this is the book that started all the Colleen Hoover stuff for me. My best friend recommended it a while ago. My sister started it and bought it for her mother-in-law before realizing what an inappropriate book it was to give to your mother-in-law. I waited for a while for it to be available at my library, but then realized that it was on my sister’s Audible account (through my Amazon account!) and finally listened to it (after suffering through some truly heinous […]

Not so great Chad

Family Money by Chad Zunker

April 27, 2023 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

This is one of those books where you’re like “that is not a normal human reaction” about fifteen times. Alex is the main character, and we start out learning about his perfect family. He loves his wife and would never lie to her. He spends the next 88% of the book blatantly lying to her. Situations arise where it would be easy and preferable to tell the truth. Alex lies. In the first few chapters, they’re on service trip in Mexico, and his father-in-law (his […]

And this is where Colleen Hoover lost me

All Your Perfects by Colleen Hoover

April 27, 2023 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

Hoo boy. In my review for “Without Merit” I spoke of “low lows” related to Colleen Hoover. This is a super low low. I was so angry after reading this book, I typed out my review on my phone probably the minute I was done reading it. Here it is:   Let me summarize this book quickly and (very) spoilery: Two people meet semi cute (their current partners are cheating on them with each other), they fall in love, and it’s a fairytale. Like seriously […]

The first two books in what I hope is a longer series!

Ninth House (Alex Stern #1) by Leigh Bardugo

Hell Bent (Alex Stern #2) by Leigh Bardugo

April 27, 2023 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

I swear I heard about this book on NPR, and I swear it was Mary Louise Kelly talking about it. I can like hear her voice talking about it, but I can’t seem to verify that, so take my memory with a grain of salt. I just remember hearing about it on the radio (and I really only listen to NPR), and then immediately buying the kindle book from Amazon. It legitimately took me over three years to finally read it. I have no idea […]

A Colleen Hoover novel where I didn’t want to strangle everyone

Without Merit by Colleen Hoover

April 27, 2023 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

So I tried out Colleen Hoover in 2022, since many women I liked and respected suggested her to me. There were some low lows (see Ugly Love), but this was a high. I think because the focus wasn’t solely on romance or getting a man, I was more invested. Plus, I didn’t want everyone to die in a fiery car crash, so that helped! Merit Voss is the main character, and she’s pretty quirky. She lives in an old converted church with her family, which […]
