CBR Diversions: Holiday Season –Time To Give BOOKS

November 10, 2023 by jomidi 9 Comments

The holidays are just around the corner. It may only be the beginning of November, but the stores are already decorated and playing holiday music. So let’s talk about book giving for the holidays. In Iceland they celebrate something called Jólabókaflóð (which means Christmas Book Flood.) The tradition, which started during WWII, is to give each other books on Christmas Eve. Families then spend the evening reading with a warm drink by a cozy fire. That sounds like heaven to me! Some people follow this […]

CBR Diversions: How was your summer reading?

September 1, 2023 by jomidi 9 Comments

All too soon summer is over, time for us to reflect on our summer reading. Did you get to all the beach reads you wanted? Did you complete a summer reading program at your local library? Did you tackle a book that has been on your TBR list forever? Did you read any of the “hot” summer titles? Did you follow any celebrity summer reading lists? Well, enough about you, here is my summer reading in a nutshell. I once again participated in my local […]

Almost American Girl by Robin Ha

Definitely Not a Comic Book

Almost American Girl by Robin Ha

August 14, 2023 by jomidi 1 Comment

When I read that my local High School had removed the graphic memoir Almost American Girl by Robin Ha from their summer reading list, I had to read it. The school board members called it a comic book. Well, I am sure glad this book hit my radar because it is excellent. I strongly feel that most high school kids would benefit from reading it. Let me start by saying I do not like reading graphic novels. My brain is not wired to enjoy reading […]

CBR Diversions: Oh, The Horror – With a Chainsaw

June 15, 2023 by jomidi 45 Comments

I am a huge scaredy cat! I cannot watch horror movies or read horror books. I still have nightmares from scary movies I saw as a kid. This makes me the perfect person to pen the Cannonball Read Horror in Summer blog post. Nowadays, there are so many subgenres of horror books – Gothic, Paranormal, Psychological, Post-Apocalyptic, and Sci-Fi, to name a few. But I am taking you back to the old horror genre of Splatterpunk. How could anybody not love that word? Under the […]

The House is on FIre by Rachel Beanland

Do yell fire in a crowded theatre

The House Is on Fire by Rachel Beanland

June 4, 2023 by jomidi Leave a Comment

I really enjoyed Rachel Beanland’s Florence Adler Swims Forever, so I was very excited for her new book The House is on Fire. I was not disappointed and will continue to read this very talented author. The House is on Fire is a historical fiction set in 1811 Richmond, Virginia, based on the true story of a tragic theater fire. I can’t think of another historical fiction set in this time. The nation is young, the Revolutionary War is not too far behind us and […]
