If you want to be happy

Happier Now by Nataly Kogan

December 21, 2019 by jomidi Leave a Comment

I don’t read a lot of self help books, maybe a couple a year.  I decided to read Happier Now by Nataly Kogan, because who doesn’t want to be happier.  The book is a combination of her story and tips on how to be happier.  Nataly is a Russian Jewish refuge who came to this country during her middle school years.  She struggled with learning English and trying to fit in and achieve the “American Dream”.  She is successful, very successful, as an entrepreneur creating […]

Coincidences

The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow

November 18, 2019 by jomidi Leave a Comment

I wonder about coincidences in books. How does it happen that three books published within months of each other all use Grand Central in NYC as an important location (The Masterpiece, Time After Time, and The Lost Girls of Paris)? How do two fantasy novels published within weeks of each other, The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow and The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern, both deal with doors connecting worlds, the magical power of writing, and a protagonist who reads their […]

Weaving a Magic Tale

The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern

September 25, 2019 by jomidi 1 Comment

I am a very lucky lady. I got myself an Advanced Reader’s Copy of The Starless Sea, the long awaited second book by The Night Circus author Erin Morgenstern. Most people will have to wait until November 5th to get their hands on this gem. The Night Circus was a magical story, and The Starless Sea is also a magical story. It is a cleverly woven tale filled with wonderful stories. The story of Zach, “The Son of the Fortune-Teller”, is the ribbon that connects […]

Fiona Davis does it again

The Chelsea Girls by Fiona Davis

August 3, 2019 by jomidi Leave a Comment

Fiona Davis is fast becoming my favorite author.  I have enjoyed all her past historical fictions – The Dollhouse, The Address, and The Masterpiece, but this one is the best yet.  All of her books center on a historical location in New York City. This one, unlike her others and many historical fictions written today, does not switch back and forth between two time periods.  It starts during WWII with quiet Hazel, the child of a “Broadway family,” including a very demanding stage mom, joining […]

A Love Letter From a Dad to his Son

Things My Son Needs to Know about the World by Fredrik Backman

May 26, 2019 by jomidi Leave a Comment

You have to love Fredrik Backman’s writing.  I am a huge fan of “A Man Called Ove” and have read most of his other work.  This short, charming book is a love letter to his young son. Backman alternates some very short 1-2 page anecdotes with some longer reflections on parenthood and life.  It is all there – from the lack of sleep to all the stuff you think you need to the struggle with getting a car seat installed correctly to changing lots of […]

The Hunt is On

The Huntress by Kate Quinn

April 18, 2019 by jomidi Leave a Comment

The author of the well reviewed The Alice Network is back with another big historical fiction.  The Huntress is a Nazi woman who most famous crime is shooting a group of children after feeding them a meal.  She has slipped though the many cracks around after WWII and disappeared.  The story is set during the war and a few years after in Boston. An odd trio of Nazi hunters are after The Huntress, hoping to find her in Boston.  Tony is a disillusioned American ex-GI.  […]
