Never Have I Ever been so offended

Never Have I Ever by Joshilyn Jackson

June 4, 2020 by jomidi Leave a Comment

I read over 100 books a year.  I admit I only write reviews on Cannonball Read for 13 of them (too busy reading to stop and write 250 words about each one).  The new psychological thriller genre which is all the rage is not my favorite.  However, I do read the “hot” ones – The Silent Patient, The Girl on the Train, The Girl in the Window, etc.  So, I picked up Never Have I Ever by Joshilyn Jackson in a desperate run to my […]

Steampunk, historical fiction, mystery?

The Watchmaker of Filigree Street by Natasha Pulley

April 6, 2020 by jomidi 4 Comments

I love steampunk and this cover is as steampunk at they get (plus the hardcover one actually has a cutout on the cover that reveals the watch on the inside page which is a really cool design).  The Watchmaker of Filigree Street by Natasha Pulley is a delightful read that defies genres.  The book takes place in Victorian London when the Irish Nationalist movement is terrorizing the city.   Bombings at Scotland yard and Victoria station are being investigated.  Could anybody but a master clockworker have […]

When one year doesn’t follow the next

Oona Out of Order by Margarita Montimore

March 13, 2020 by jomidi 1 Comment

Oona Out of Order by Margarita Montimore has a fascinating premise.  What would your life be like, if every New Years at midnight you were in a new year of your life, but not the next year.  Oona leaps every year at midnight on New Year’s and travels to another year in her life, sometimes she travels forward and sometimes she travels backward.  Each leap is marked in the book with the year, her age that year, and how old she really is.  So at […]

What really happens in the jury room?

The Holdout by Graham Moore

February 27, 2020 by jomidi 1 Comment

What happens when a young black teacher is on trial for the murder of a wealthy LA businessman’s daughter (who was his student) and there isn’t a body?  You end up with a very long, very publicized trial, and a jury who can’t reach a decision.  Or can they?  In a similar fashion to Twelve Angry Men, can one women change the minds of the rest of the jury to vote not guilty? The Holdout is a brilliant mystery by Graham Moore, a great writer […]

What happens when the last dragon on earth lives in the Bayou?

Highfire by Eoin Colfer

February 4, 2020 by jomidi 1 Comment

Eoin Colfer has penned a bunch of YA/children’s novels.  His extremely popular Artemis Fowl series will soon be a movie.  Highfire is an adult novel, which is more of an adventure tale than a fantasy novel, despite having a vodka loving dragon named Vern as its protagonist. Colfer is funny, funny enough to have been the one to pen book six in the Hitchhiker’s Guide series. The story is set in the swamps in New Orleans and has a memorable cast of characters – the […]

“Words! Words! I’m so sick of words!”

The Grammarians by Cathleen Schine

January 20, 2020 by jomidi 1 Comment

The Grammarians is a delightful book about identical twin girls who love words.  The book starts almost at their birth, when the girls talk in their cribs in their “secret language”.  It progresses through their lives as they begin their passion for words, collecting words from a huge, old dictionary their father buys them, loving the “My Fair Lady” soundtrack, tormenting their uncle and cousin, moving out, and starting their careers.  Their lives are joined, they have the same thoughts, and the author frequently asks […]
