The Two Towers

The Two Towers by J.R.R. Tolkien

February 8, 2025 by jmsudar Leave a Comment

Years. It had been years since I read The Two Towers. Like, maybe 20? I recall it being slow as hell, ponderous, difficult to read, and full of too much poetry and songwriting. Part of that is accurate, part is completely nuts: there’s plenty of language porn for the linguifile, but the pacing is solid and so much stuff happens. There’s a ton of exposition, which is probably why it felt so slow and plodding to me, but that doesn’t actually represent bad writing or a […]

Warhammer 40k Core Rulebook 10th edition

Warhammer 40k Core Rulebook 10th edition by Games Workshop

December 31, 2024 by jmsudar 1 Comment

The last in my sprint to technically have 52 books before the end of CBR16. The Warhammer 40k rulebook is an absolute slog; too wordy in the creative parts, too difficult to grasp all the rules until you’ve lost a bunch of games in a row. Don’t bother unless you’re allergic to time and money.

Tau Codex 10th Edition

Tau Codex 10th Edition by Games Workshop

December 31, 2024 by jmsudar Leave a Comment

Okay I admit I’m really padding my numbers here, but this is a pretty big book and I did read it all, trying to get to a point where I stop losing so many games. The Tau are unique within Warhammer 40k as one of the only optimistic races who use technology to the betterment of everyone. This stands in stark contrast to… everyone else. In addition, they get some seriously fun toys, like gigantic mech suits, powerful high tech weaponry, and all at the […]

The Fellowship of the Ring

The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien

December 31, 2024 by jmsudar Leave a Comment

Do I really need to say anything about this book? It’s still as good as it ever was, remains completely influential to everything we interpret as high fantasy, and the language is like slipping into a warm bath.

Soul Arts

Soul Arts by VaatiVidya

December 31, 2024 by jmsudar Leave a Comment

Soul Arts is a visual exploration of fan art within the FromSoftware universe, curated by VaatiVidya, one of the best creators in the space. I bought this book immediately, hoping and having that hope rewarded, that it would contain a collection of all the fan art he’s shown off on his YouTube channel. The pages are gigantic and detailed, the lore is complete, and the value is high for anyone who values these games.

Uncanny

Uncanny by Junji Ito

December 31, 2024 by jmsudar Leave a Comment

Gonna speedrun my way to 52 like an asshole who completely missed the point. Uncanny is an excellent insight into how Junji Ito worked across his storied career, akin to Stephen King’s On Writing and every bit as enjoyable.
