Journey to the Center of the Earth

Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne

March 8, 2025 by jmsudar 1 Comment

Hoowee was this one a stinker. I think this may be the worst of the 19th century lit I’ve been working my way through yet. You generally have to put up with a lot of bunk science and some pretty terrible social behavior, which in the former is just the state of the world at that time and in the latter is gross as hell at any time. While I wouldn’t necessarily say JttCotE (don’t wanna type it out every time sorry not sorry) is […]

Character Limit

Character Limit by Kate Conger, Ryan Mac

March 2, 2025 by jmsudar 2 Comments

I’ll be honest about something: I post under my real name. I also work in tech, so this occasionally makes me feel like the biggest idiot on the planet. It’s a stupid thing to do, but at the same time, we live in a terrible inflection point in history where we’re finally forced to learn what we would do in 40s Germany. I don’t want to figure out what I’ll do, but for the time being, I think it’s important that we don’t hide. We […]

Batman: Haunted Knight by Jeph Loeb, Doug Moench, Tim Sale

March 1, 2025 by jmsudar Leave a Comment

This is one of those books I used to get over and over from the library back home. I remember picking it up on a whim, and the first full page shot of Scarecrow hooking me. Then I remember trying to be a cool kid and pretending I’m too cool for Batman, yet in spite of that the character designs and images stuck with me for years, until I finally bought a copy and revisited it. It mostly holds up! Haunted Knight is a collection […]

Alley

Alley by Junji Ito

February 23, 2025 by jmsudar Leave a Comment

This is one of the rare cases where I’m not going to full-throatedly recommend a Junji Ito. Most of the stories in Alley are the same stories that made it into the Junji Ito cartoons, alongside Shoichi, which is a terrible series of stories in my opinion. These are a lot of the weirdest Ito stories that make a little more sense than they did in animated form, but not enough to really make the difference. A standout story is Mold, which continues Ito’s grossout storytelling similar […]

The Silmarillion

The Silmarillion by J. R. R. Tolkien

February 22, 2025 by jmsudar Leave a Comment

To begin with I’m shocked how much I liked this. If you’re a Lord of the Rings fan, and especially if you’re friends with an extra intense fan, you almost certainly know about this book. Within what you know, probably infamy? As in, this is an infamously dull book that even hardcore fans typically don’t recommend. The style is dry, the language plodding, and the family trees extensive. But, if you’ve ever asked yourself in earnest, “so who tf is Gandalf really and why does […]

Return of the King

Return of the King by J.R.R. Tolkien

February 9, 2025 by jmsudar Leave a Comment

This is another one where I won’t have much to say because better things have already been said ad nauseam. tl;dr, Return of the King is a masterpiece. One thing I missed as a kid is the slow build of Frodo’s burden as they get closer and closer to Mt. Doom. You get this sense of the gravity of the task and how it’s almost draining Frodo’s life throughout the journey. It shows the depth of the Ring’s power and the threat it carries as […]
