The Long Halloween

The Long Halloween by Jeph Loeb, Gregory Wright

July 12, 2025 by jmsudar Leave a Comment

The Long Halloween is one of those Batman comic runs that makes the diehard fans sit up and take notice. I’m not sure this is what I am, unfortunately. This story is by no means bad, but it’s grim, the color scheme is dark, and it tends towards the melodrama. The best Batman is Batman with a small amount of humor alongside it. The DC Animated Universe gives us a stern and serious Batman, but it also gives us a horny Wonder Woman for him […]

This Inevitable Ruin

This Inevitable Ruin by Matt Dinniman

July 6, 2025 by jmsudar Leave a Comment

I have now recommended Dungeon Crawler Carl to… six people directly? All six are on my wife’s down line so she’s doing well in this little cultural MLM. This Inevitable Ruin continues to escalate the emotion in serious ways. It would be difficult to discuss them without spoilers, so I am going to let this be another extremely short review. Let me just say: this is the book where Carl gets to feel feelings for a little bit. He’s spent so much time getting raked […]

The Eyes of the Bedlam Bride

The Eyes of the Bedlam Bride by Matt Dinniman

July 5, 2025 by jmsudar Leave a Comment

I’m going to write an even shorter review than usual today because the fucking cat ran across my super nice mechanical keyboard, set some setting which disabled keys that I need, and so I’m writing on my backup keyboard, which is Dell garbage. The Eyes of the Bedlam Bride continues the trend of Carl stories absolutely ruling. The series increases in both intensity and excitement, new stakes are added, and it keeps getting funnier. Several fan favorite characters come into their own across this story, including […]

Why Don’t We Just Kill the Kid in the Omelas Hole

Why Don't We Just Kill the Kid in the Omelas Hole by Isabel J. Kim

June 21, 2025 by jmsudar 4 Comments

I’m fudging a little bit: this isn’t a book, it’s a short story. It’s an absolutely outstanding short story  however. It’s based on a story by Ursula K. LeGuin and expands on it in ways that made me want to go and read the original. Were I not locked joyfully within the Dungeon Crawler Carl universe so completely that I plan to start a reread the moment I finish book 7, I would. As it is I’ll have to wait. Why Don’t We Just Kill the […]

The Butcher’s Masquerade

The Butcher's Masquerade by Matt Dinniman

June 14, 2025 by jmsudar Leave a Comment

Dinniman has done it again. The fifth Carl book continues to escalate the stakes, the action, and the emotion. Carl continues his active opposition to the Borant Corporation, which gets stricter with its rules even as Carl gets more open with his resistance. On the seventh floor of the dungeon, additional players are added: hunters, outsiders to the dungeon who pay for the opportunity to hunt the crawlers for sport. Carl takes that personally, and goes on in no uncertain terms, a killing spree. There […]

The Gate of the Feral Gods

The Gate of the Feral Gods by Matt Dinniman

June 8, 2025 by jmsudar Leave a Comment

It feels oddly privileged to be a fan of Dungeon Crawler Carl right now. The series is really on the rise: numerous people have talked to me about it out of nowhere recently, and apparently they’re making a TV show. My wife is keen to point out that everyone in my circle is on her down line, including me, and I can’t argue with that. The important thing is that I’m now on book five, and they continue to be awesome. Carl and Donut have […]
