Tim and Eric – Zone Theory

Tim and Eric - Zone Theory by Tim Heidecker & Eric Wareheim

June 2, 2024 by jmsudar Leave a Comment

If you know anything about Tim and Eric, you’re probably repulsed. If you’re in the strange sub-genre of people (like me) who find their style, which has been aptly named “anti-humor,” funny, Zone Theory… is partially for you. There’s a lot to love about Zone Theory. It’s in that clear T&E style, where they appear to have sourced all their talent for photoshoots and the like from Craigslist as opposed to a casting company. You can learn all about giving “Probo” to your wife. They […]

Stitches

Stitches by Junji Ito

May 18, 2024 by jmsudar Leave a Comment

The more Japanese fiction I read, the less I expect it to explain itself. This is true whether you are reading Junji Ito or Haruki Murakami; there is a tendency to let weirdness just sort of sit out there where everyone can see it, creating a surreal feeling where you can’t really tell if you’re missing something or not. Stitches follows this pattern, with short vignettes (each one referred to as a “stitch”) making up a series of strange tales. This book is not a […]

The Dunwich Horror

The Dunwich Horror by HP Lovecraft & Francois Baranger

May 18, 2024 by jmsudar Leave a Comment

Continuing his excellent adaptations of Lovecraft’s work, Francois Baranger delivers The Dunwich Horror in stunning detail and deep, disturbing horror. The Dunwich Horror tells the story of the isolated, xenophobic and disturbed New England (natch) town of Dunwich. Somehow, in a story with zero immigrants, Lovecraft once again manages to be intensely racist and bigoted. In this case, the majority of his bigotry is targeted at the townsfolk themselves, implying that the plot of the story is more or less par for the course for isolated […]

Lying For Money

Lying For Money by Dan Davies

April 20, 2024 by jmsudar Leave a Comment

Lying for Money is a comprehensive high-level look at financial fraud. You learn about everything from the early colonial fraudsters of the Mosquito Coast up to and including crypto and the Housing Market Collapse of 2008. The author is a financial writer who’s covered the field extensively and is only a _little_ insufferably smug. Overall I don’t really know what to say about this book. I heard about it in the context of crypto fraud, and that section is glancing but fairly complete. It covers […]

At the Mountains of Madness Part 2 – Manga

At the Mountains of Madness Part 2 – Manga by HP Lovecraft,Gou Tanabe,Zack Davisson

March 17, 2024 by jmsudar Leave a Comment

When writing my review yesterday for part 1 I forgot to mention one of the biggest feathers in the cap of this Lovecraft story: it inspired John Carpenter’s The Thing, the greatest movie ever made. In part 2, we’ve moved beyond the Lake Camp and the horrors therein and to the mysterious city on the plateau that lies beyond the mountains of madness. This city is one of the chief reasons why visual representations of this story are so beneficial, as you get to experience […]

At the Mountains of Madness Part 1 – Manga

At the Mountains of Madness Part 1 - Manga by HP Lovecraft, Gou Tanabe, Zack Davisson

March 16, 2024 by jmsudar Leave a Comment

At the Mountains of Madness is one of Lovecraft’s best stories. Part of that is because I think this might be… the only one without overt and uncomfortable racism? Like at all? I can’t think of any racism present at least, which is a relief because that is a huge asterisk around all of Lovecraft and I totally understand why that ruins him for many people. He was a product of his time, but also he went out of his way to be disgusting, xenophobic, […]
