Battle for the Truth

Towards Zero by Agatha Christie

April 30, 2025 by jeverett15 1 Comment

When I heard that BritBox had a new Agatha Christie adaptation, I almost just pressed play assuming I had already read the book. I’ve read so many of Christie’s novels I can’t actually remember them all, or even all their titles. But then I heard it wasn’t a Poirot or Marple, which meant there was a chance I hadn’t actually got around to it. The detective here is Superintendent Battle, who unlike the more celebrated Christie sleuths, has no real defining trait. He’s just a […]

A Sprint to the Finish

Run by Ann Patchett

April 23, 2025 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

On a snowy night, Bernard Doyle, the former mayor of Boston, drags his two adopted sons to a lecture by Jesse Jackson, Sr. Doyle is white and his sons, Tip and Teddy, are black, but Doyle is by far the most interested in Jackson’s lecture. Tip would much rather be back in the ichthyology  lab with his fish samples, and Teddy would rather be visiting his great-uncle John, a retired priest recently in the news for supposedly curing the sick. Outside the lecture hall, a […]

Into the Woods

The God of the Woods by Liz Moore

April 19, 2025 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

When 13-year-old Barbara Van Laar disappears from her bunk at the summer camp her family has owned for years, the incident stirs up unhappy memories for her parents and the town at large. Fourteen years earlier, in 1961, her brother Bear had disappeared after being separated from his grandfather during a hike, and he was never seen again. Barbara’s disappearance is relayed in Moore’s text through it’s impact on the people around her, her bunkmate Tracey, a shy girl trying to get through her parents’ […]

Mr. Saturday Night

Lorne: The Man Who Invented Saturday Night Live by Susan Morrison

April 13, 2025 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

I don’t know if you’ve heard, but Saturday Night Live is 50 years old this season. (They’ve tried to keep it quiet.) That makes the time especially fortuitous for this doorstep of a book about it’s founding impresario, the inscrutable Lorne Michaels. Everyone knows who Lorne Michaels is, but even those who know him best say they don’t really know what makes him tick. Susan Morrison makes a decent stab at capturing his essence, starting with his upbringing in Toronto and the untimely death of […]

Table for Two by Amor Towles

April 8, 2025 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

Table for Two is divided into two parts, one labeled “New York” and the other “Los Angeles.” The New York part consists of six short stories set mostly in the Big Apple. The first story, “The Line”, set in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution, follows a farmer dragged to Moscow due to his wife’s fervent devotion to Communism. Genial despite his joblessness, he finds a niche for himself by cheerfully waiting in lines that others cannot, for bread, milk and other essentials. Eventually, he […]

Meet the Met

From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsburg

March 29, 2025 by jeverett15 1 Comment

Every once in a while, I read a children’s classic I somehow never got assigned in school or got to on my own, just to see what all the hype was about. I don’t know how I missed From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, but I wish I’d gotten to enjoy it back then. The book tells the story of Claudia and Jamie, siblings who run away from home (at older sister Claudia’s behest) and decide to live at the Metropolitan Museum […]
