Never Flinch

Never Flinch by Stephen King

July 12, 2025 by jeverett15 1 Comment

Never Flinch is a Holly Gibney novel, the fifth King has written, though only the second where she is a leading character. Gibney, who shined as a supporting player in the Bill Hodges trilogy and The Outsider, has had a rougher time of it in her starring roles. Holly, who survived a childhood under her oppressive mother’s thumb to become an ace private investigator, is the kind of character audiences instinctively root for, but King’s handling of her has not always been the best. Her […]

The Formula: How Rogues, Geniuses, and Speed Freaks Reengineered F1 into the World's Fastest-Growing Sport by Joshua Robinson and Jonathan Clegg

July 6, 2025 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

A few years ago, when I decided to make a more earnest effort at becoming a soccer fan (or football fan, if you prefer) i read a book called The Club, by Joshua Robinson and Jonathan Clegg, two reporters for the Wall Street Journal. The Club covered the English Premier League from its formation to the present, focusing on how the league grew into the behemoth it is today. The Premier League, with it’s 20 teams, all owned by wildly rich men with immense egos, […]

Native American Horror Story

The Buffalo Hunter Hunter by Stephen Graham Jones

June 29, 2025 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

I was very excited to get into this, based on the premise and the combination of genres. A historical fiction-slash-horror novel about a member of the Blackfoot tribe getting revenge on the people who massacred his people? With a murky supernatural element adding a bit of mystery to the proceedings? Sounds great. So I’m very disappointed to report that The Buffalo Hunter Hunter just wasn’t for me. My main problem is the pacing. People who like this book (and judging from online reactions, there are […]

A Perfectly Cromulent Book

Stupid TV, Be More Funny: How the Golden Era of The Simpsons Changed Television - and America - Forever by Allan Siegel

June 28, 2025 by jeverett15 3 Comments

The Simpsons has been on the air long enough that it’s best joke about being a long-running TV show, The 138th Episode Spectacular, aired nearly 30 years ago. A book covering the entire lifespan of the show would be quite long and probably be a pretty depressing read for the last two-thirds or so, given the general consensus of the show’s level of quality. Luckily, The Ringer’s Alan Siegel has confined himself to the show’s “Golden Era” a nebulous concept he seems to define as […]

Hit Girls: Britney, Taylor, Beyoncé, and the Women Who Built Pop's Shiniest Decade by Nora Princiotti

June 24, 2025 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

Nora Princiotti is a podcast host for The Ringer who was mainly covering the NFL until her and Nathan Hubbard started hosting the Every Single Album podcast, on which, per the title, they would cover the careers of the biggest pop stars alive, one album at a time. I started listening to the podcast as a relative latecomer to Taylor Swift’s discography, and their episodes on her career are some of their best. In 2024, the Year of the Pop Girl, they greatly expanded their […]

Close-Up on Sunset Boulevard: Billy Wilder, Norma Desmond, and the Dark American Dream by Sam Staggs

June 23, 2025 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

More than seventy years after its initial release, Billy Wilder’s Sunset Boulevard is justly remembered as a stone-cold classic. It’s vision of the seamier side of Hollywood has become definitive in many ways, from the way has-been stars are frequently compared to its doomed heroine Norma Desmond to the way people who haven’t seen a frame of it still know the immortal closing line, “All right, Mr. DeMille, I’m ready for my close-up.” The film’s legacy has only been buttressed by the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical […]
