The Zebra-Striped Hearse by Ross Macdonald

February 9, 2020 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

I’m nearing the end of my years-long dive into the Lew Archer series, and I’ve begun spacing them out to avoid finishing. The Zebra-Striped Hearse is definitely a lesser entry in the series, but there’s still much to be enjoyed. Archer himself is always enjoyable. As tough as they come and smarter than others give him credit for, Macdonald’s private eye extraordinaire finds himself on the trail of a young woman on the verge of coming into a fortune but who may be about to […]

A Quaint and Curious Volume

The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson

February 2, 2020 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

Subtlety isn’t really what I’m looking for when it comes to books about possessed buildings trying to drive their occupants crazy.  But that’s exactly what Shirley Jackson offers in the psychological horror classic The Haunting of Hill House. The book, which is the basis of a recent Netflix series, follows four strangers brought together by a strange, old mansion. Dr. John Montague has been looking for an opportunity to conduct serious research into unexplained phenomena for a long time. He hires young bohemian Theodora and […]

Brooklyn, Brooklyn Take Me In

The Brooklyn Follies by Paul Auster

January 26, 2020 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

This book shouldn’t work and in many ways doesn’t. The narrator should be unlikable, but I liked him. The plot relies on seemingly intelligent people behaving incredibly stupidly. There are entirely too many coincidences of the type that mostly went out of fashion around the time Charles Dickens died. And yet… Nathan Glass is a divorced and retired cancer survivor who decides to spend his remaining years in Brooklyn. Detested by his ex-wife and in a fight with his only daughter, Nathan lives a solitary […]

Getting Into Dodge

Doc by Mary Doria Russell

January 21, 2020 by jeverett15 1 Comment

By now, the legend of John Henry “Doc” Holliday has been amended and corrected so many times that it can feel like the truth might be irretrievable. Enter Mary Doria Russell’s Doc, which sets out to tell the truth of the man through fiction. Doc tells the story of its titular dentist from his days as a young man in antebellum Georgia to his infamous days associating with the Earp brothers in the wild west outpost of Dodge City, Kansas. Russell guides the reader through […]

They Might Just Make It After All

The Best of Everything by Rona Jaffe

January 11, 2020 by jeverett15 1 Comment

I’m a sucker for books about plucky young women trying to make it in New York and in that sub-genre Rona Jaffe’s The Best of Everything is a must-read. Jaffe follows a group of women in the early 1950s who are all at the start of their professional careers and working at a second-rate publishing company in Manhattan. Though all around the same age the ladies are at vastly different stages of their lives, with differing goals and visions of success. Some want to make […]

Lurid Color

Nightmare in Pink by John D. Macdonald

December 29, 2019 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

I’ve been haphazardly making my way through John D. Macdonald’s Travis McGee series, which explains how I am just now arriving at the second McGee story. While I found the first McGee book, The Deep Blue Good-By, extremely affecting and well-written, this follow-up is much different. Nightmare in Pink is a lurid romp with an absolutely outrageous plot. Whereas McGee is usually something of a noble figure in this book he is more of an anti-hero. Usually Macdonald’s plot are complex and intertwined while the […]
