Dangerous Games

Hide and Seek by Ian Rankin

January 18, 2021 by jeverett15 2 Comments

Nearly four years after reading the first novel in the Rebus series I have finally returned to read the second. This puts me in fine form to finish the series sometime in the 22nd century. This installment finds Detective Inspector John Rebus investigating a death that everyone else would be fine just writing off as another drug overdose. After warning his friend Tracy to hide Ronnie McGrath is found dead on the floor of the decrepit old building he’s been squatting in. There are candles […]

And Now For Something Completely Superfluous

Creativity: A Short and Cheerful Guide by John Cleese

January 11, 2021 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

First let me just say that I realize John Cleese’s “old British fart” Twitter persona has made him pretty unpopular in a lot of places, and that I would not normally have read his new book. But, given that it was a gift from someone who is smart enough to not be online as much as I am I decided to give it a try. It was helpful in making that decision that the book is quite literally pocket sized and took me less than […]

All Hail the Queen

The Queen's Gambit by Walter Tevis

January 10, 2021 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

Netflix’s adaptation of The Queen’s Gambit was one of my favorite things of 2020. After blitzing through all seven episodes I even started playing chess again and enjoying it despite how terrible I am. Between Anya Taylor-Joy’s incredible performance, the unique subject matter, and the incredible vintage clothing there was a lot to love. So I eagerly snapped up a copy of the source material and plunged in. The danger of course with reading a book after seeing the adaptation is that the book will […]

Final Jeopardy

The Answer Is....: Reflections on My Life by Alex Trebek

January 4, 2021 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

Appearing as a contestant on Jeopardy is the #1 item on my bucket list, so you can imagine how hard the passing of Alex Trebek hit me. Still, my natural reluctance toward celebrity memoirs was hard to overcome. Thankfully a copy of The Answer Is… was waiting under the Christmas tree this year. Trebek proves to be an engaging writer. The book is conversational in nature though there is a fair amount of biographical information up front. The first third or so is much more […]

The Long and Winding Road

The Stand by Stephen King

December 29, 2020 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

Was it crazy or brilliant to read a book about a superflu in 2020? On the one hand, *vague gesture to the world outside my apartment*, but on the other, it was a healthy reminder that things could be worse. Captain Trips, the colloquial name given to King’s lab-created bug, kills nearly all of humanity and most of the dogs after it escapes from an Army facility. Ah, but nearly is the keyword. Though King takes his time walking through the spread of Captain Trips […]

The Case of the Missing Miss

The Wycherly Woman by Ross Macdonald

December 29, 2020 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

Having read them out of order, this wound up as my last unread Lew Archer novel. I’m going to miss cracking open one of his cases for the first time. Ross Macdonald’s divorced ex-cop private eye might not have much in the way of distinguishing characteristics, but he’s one heck of a character just the same. Tough with a flinty intelligence and a noggin seemingly made of steel, Archer specializes in unraveling long buried family secrets and exposing especially dastardly deeds. The case of Phoebe […]
