Not-so-Normal People

Beautiful World, Where Are You by Sally Rooney

September 14, 2021 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

Beautiful World, Where Are You (which should really have a question mark at the end, if you ask me) is being hyped up as the must-read book of the Fall. Sally Rooney’s first two novels were both big hits, with Normal People going on to be adapted into a massively successful TV series. (The adaptation of her first novel, Conversations With Friends, will be released next year.) Rooney herself is an unlikely superstar. The self-professed Marxist seems uncomfortable with fame and ambivalent about the financial […]

Euphoria by Lily King

September 9, 2021 by jeverett15 3 Comments

Euphoria is novel clearly inspired by the life and work of the anthropologist Margaret Mead. Like Mead, King’s protagonist Nell Stone is dedicated to learning about the tribes of New Guinea and bringing that knowledge to the West. She is joined on her journey by her new husband and fellow anthropologist Schuyler “Fen” Fenwick, though the two sometimes seem to work at cross-purposes. Their story is mostly narrated by a third anthropologist, Andrew Bankson, who introduces the couple to a tribe called the Tam, seven […]

Flipping the Script

Interior Chinatown by Charles Yu

September 3, 2021 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

Willis Wu, the protagonist of Interior Chinatown, sees his whole life as a television show in which he has been relegated to minor parts due to his Asianness rendering him a perpetual Other. He describes himself as a “Generic Asian Man” hoping to work his way all the way up to “Kung Fu Guy,” the highest role he can conceive an Asian man attaining in Hollywood. He and his parents, “Old Asian Man” and “Old Asian Woman,” work together in the Golden Palace restaurant, where […]

With Artificial Friends Like These

Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro

August 29, 2021 by jeverett15 1 Comment

Kazuo Ishiguro doesn’t make things easy for himself. At least in the books of his that I’ve read, he seems determined to burden himself with the most limited narrator through which to tell his stories. Of course, that also creates a lot of work for the reader, who has to piece together what’s really going on from just the scraps given to them by the narrator’s perspective. The title character of Klara and the Sun, Ishiguro’s eighth and newest novel, is an Artificial Friend (“AF” […]

Everything You Want to Know About Jeopardy Except Who the Next Host Will Be

Answers in the Form of Questions: A Definitive History and Insider's Guide to Jeopardy! by Claire McNear

August 26, 2021 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

As you might be aware, Jeopardy! is in a bit of a crisis at the moment, as the months-long quest to replace the iconic Alex Trebek resulted in the disastrous elevation of Mike Richards, only for Richards to resign after one day taping episodes. That resignation was at least partially a result of the reporting done by Claire McNear, a writer for the Ringer who has made America’s Favorite Quiz Show her bailiwick. McNear did the legwork of listening to dozens of podcast episodes hosted […]

How This Got Made

The Devil's Candy: The Anatomy of a Hollywood Fiasco by Julie Salamon

August 21, 2021 by jeverett15 4 Comments

Like everyone else involved in the making of Bonfire of the Vanities, film critic and author Julie Salamon thought she was signing up for the movie of the year. Warner Brothers paid an enormous sum for the film rights to Tom Wolfe’s bestselling novel, one of the most talked about books of the decade. They got Tom Hanks and Bruce Willis to star and hired director Brian De Palma, fresh off The Untouchables, one of the biggest hits in his long career. With a script […]
