Eating Your Grief

Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner

September 2, 2022 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

Reading Crying in H Mart, Michelle Zauner’s examination of her relationship with her mother in the aftermath of her early death from cancer, it was impossible for me not to psychoanalyze the author and eventually it became impossible for not to psychoanalyze myself as well. In all it made this book about a necessarily heavy topic a rather burdensome read and not one I particularly enjoyed. Zauner, the lead singer of the pop band Japanese Breakfast, grew up in Oregon with her Caucasian father and […]

Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin

August 28, 2022 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow is the tale of the friendship between Sam Masur, later Mazer, and Sadie Green, video game-designers, business-partners, and two-thirds of the founders of Unfair Games. It was video games that brought the unlikely pair into each other’s lives to begin with. Sam is recovering from a car accident that killed his mother and permanently damaged his foot while Sadie is visiting her cancer-patient older sister when the two begin gaming in the hospital’s game room. Years later, after some bumps […]

Notes on a Scandal by Zoë Heller

August 24, 2022 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

Flighty, hippie-ish pottery teacher Sheba Hart and spinster English teacher Barbara Covett seem like an unlikely pair, probably because they are. Sheba is an upper-class woman married to an older man with whom she has two children, while Barbara has lived her whole life with only a cat for a companion. Sheba is open and intuitve and Barbara is an inflexible rule-follower. Their teaching styles too are quite different. Sheba struggles to maintain control over her students, let alone teach them anything, while Barbara’s classroom […]

A Policeman’s Lot is Not a Happy One

The Abstainer by Ian McGuire

August 22, 2022 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

In 1867 Manchester, the hangings of three Irishman have the city on edge. The rebels of the Fenian brotherhood have sworn revenge, and to put it in motion they’ve imported a hired gun from America. Stephen Doyle is an Irish-born veteran of the U.S. Civil War, having escaped abuse and overwork on his uncle’s farm. He’s a hard, unforgiving man committed to the cause of Irish freedom and unafraid to use violent means to achieve it. The Abstainer of the title is James O’Connor, an […]

The Reports of Her Death Were Slightly Exaggerated

Dava Shastri's Last Day by Kirthana Ramisetti

August 16, 2022 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

Sometimes a flashy premise is a double-edged sword. The hook that catches the reader’s attention, and indeed might be what got the book published in the first place, can also lead to the book’s downfall if the author doesn’t do a good enough job of selling it. Such is the case with Dava Shastri’s Last Day. The title character is one of the world’s wealthiest self-made women and a celebrated philanthropist. When she finds out that she is dying, she arranges to have word of […]

Short King

Skeleton Crew by Stephen King

August 15, 2022 by jeverett15 2 Comments

I’m never quite sure how to review a short story collection. Recapping each individual story would get rather tedious, and there isn’t a strong thematic connection between the twenty-odd stories presented here apart from the fact that they’re all very definitely Stephen King stories. The collection kicks off with its longest entry, the novella The Mist, which sets an appropriately eerie tone. As a bunch of Mainers ride out a bizarre cataclysmic event in a grocery store, their humanity is pushed to the brink. Several […]
