It's Alive by Julian David Stone

January 8, 2023 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

Fresh of the success of Dracula, Universal’s 23-year-old head of production Carl Laemmle, Jr. is looking for another hit to solidify his position at the studio. He believes he’s found just the ticket in an adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic horror novel, Frankenstein. Unfortunately for Junior, his father and the studio’s founder Carl Laemmle, Sr. does not agree. Over the course of several weeks in the summer of 1931, Junior tries to put the finishing touches on the production of Frankenstein. There are still little […]

Box Office Flop

Cult Classic by Sloane Crosley

January 3, 2023 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

In Sloane Crosley’s Cult Classic, a woman named Lola is living many women’s worst nightmare: she keeps running into her ex-boyfriends. Even worse? It’s not an accident. Lola is a lifelike creation. She’s smart and witty, but can also be acerbic and mean. She’s able to clinically dissect the flaws of her former partners while also being honest about her own issues. She’s not exactly likeable, but she is relatable, at least to a point. That point is when the novel’s high-concept premise kicks into […]

The Book of Saul

Comedy Comedy Comedy Drama by Bob Odenkirk

December 29, 2022 by jeverett15 1 Comment

This is sort of a curious choice for my last review of the year, as I’ve never seen either of the author’s best-known performances. Though I enjoy sketch comedy I missed the boat on Mr. Show w/Bob and David, and I quit on Breaking Bad (heresy!) before Saul Goodman entered the picture. What can I say? Whenever I have seen Bob Odenkirk’s work I’ve always thought he seemed like a really funny, really smart guy, and Amazon was selling the e-book for $1.99. Comedy Comedy […]

Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg

December 17, 2022 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

As someone who watched a whole lot of Game Show Network reruns as a child, Fannie Flagg was familiar to me from her Match Game appearances. Though she demonstrated a quick wit from her perch next to Richard Dawson, I was still surprised to find out that she also a popular author. Thanks to the 1991 film adaptation, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe is her best known novel. Like the film, the novel is a set of parallel stories. In the frame […]

The World’s Game

Soccer Against the Enemy by Simon Kuper

December 12, 2022 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

More travelogue than polemic, Soccer Against the Enemy, or Football Against the Enemy if you prefer, is Simon Kuper’s account of his journey around the world in search of universal truths and local particularities about the world’s most popular sport. It’s an audacious project for Kuper, one he undertook in his early 20s and on a shoestring budget, staying in youth hostels and traveling as cheaply as possible. Everywhere he goes, Kuper finds all sorts of people willing to talk to him about soccer and […]

Desperate Housewives

The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix

November 29, 2022 by jeverett15 1 Comment

Grady Hendrix’s books really stand out on the bookstore shelf. In a world where way too many covers feature the same half-dozen design tropes (stop and count the vaguely outlined, oddly eyeless couples on romance novel covers the next time you pop into your local bookstore) Hendrix’s covers are refreshingly different. From the tabletop game vibe of My Best Friend’s Exorcism to the starkness of a red folding-chair against a black background on The Final Girl Support Group, they definitely stand out. The Southern Book […]
